‘Magic mushrooms’ are narcotics: Police Ni Komang Erviani, The Jakarta Post, Denpasar | Headlines | Fri, December 12 2014, 9:35 AM Headlines News

The Bali Police have warned all residents, as well as tourists vacationing on the island, to avoid consumption of “magic mushrooms”, stating it could lead to a prison term.
“All people who consume and trade in magic mushrooms are violating the Narcotics Law,” Denpasar Police drug section head Comr. I Gede Ganefo said recently.
Popularly known as magic mushrooms, the psilocybin mushroom has been included as a type 1 narcotic since earlier this year.
Magic mushrooms used to be sold, and openly promoted, in dozens of food stalls and restaurants in Bali, especially in the Kuta area, often as juice or in omelets.
With the new classification as a narcotic, magic mushrooms are no longer openly advertised, however, one seller, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “You can still easily find magic mushrooms in the Poppies area.”
Ganefo said the police had actively disseminated information on the danger of consuming magic mushrooms to the public, as well as restaurants, in Kuta.
“Many people do not yet know that magic mushrooms are illegal and they could face a prison term if they sell or consume them. They think it is all right as they grow naturally in manure,” Ganefo said.
Denpasar Police, in cooperation with Kuta Police, began promoting information on the narcotic status of magic mushrooms in September this year, also putting up banners stating that magic mushrooms are illegal.

i wonder why they suddenly decided it as so.
perhaps it became a nuisance?, but in what way?..
edit, i guess it probably wasnt the best approach to sell them so openly. i agree that they could lead to more problems if not used properly, they shouldnt be sold like candy, but i also dont think they should ruin people's lives by locking them up and putting a permanent mark on their records for choosing to use them. that's just dumb, even dumber than jumping off a hotel balcony while high on magic mushrooms..

Ever been to Bali? 18 year old retards consuming massive quantities of alcohol ("mate, a bottle of whiskey costs what a pint costs back home! Lets drink a whole one each!") mixed with a complete disregard for the culture they are shitting on ("come'n now mate we are helping their economy! By staying in $10 hostels owned by westerners and bartering the $1.25 curries down to $1!).
I'm not disappointed to see this and anyone who has seen the complete chaos caused by these idiots (the bottom of the barrel in young tourists are attracted to traveling here, though all will come home with "life changing/eye opening experiences") will see this as a good thing. No matter how pro-choice you are, encouraging drug/partying/prostitution tourism in a traditionally conservative culture just has a hugely detrimental effect on the country as a whole.
By having impoverished people openly selling mushrooms with no instruction whatsoever alongside alcohol, you are just asking for disaster, which is what the scene in south east asia is. It is sickening and sad to see, and unfortunately destroying yet another culture due to western overindulgence and exploitation. Decriminalization with education is a working drug policy, not absolute anarchy with no law/corrupt law.
In this case, it will actually lower the drug usage and create a more safe environment, as people won't be able to buy mushroom shakes while loaded on stimulants and alcohol with no idea what they are doing besides the goal to get more fucked up.

i agree, i had no idea it was like that.. i really thought it'd be much more expensive to vacation over there.. seems like they need to raise their prices, not their penalties..
that does suck for their culture tho. seems like a really beautiful place.

The biggest expense with a trip to bali/southeast asia is the plane ticket in the first place. Its insanely inexpensive to be there, and you almost wouldn't believe it unless you are actually there. There is just a ton of poverty and prices reflect that, you can spend money if you want to but it is incredibly cheap to travel there and this attracts a lot of people to travel there.

Alcohol isn't really that cheap in Bali. There are high taxes on alcohol, especially the imported stuff. You can get the local beers somewhat cheaper and if you wanted spirits you could buy Arak but you risk getting methanol poisoning.
Food isn't really that cheap either unless you go to a warung but I'd be too worried about food poisoning to go to one of those.
I was offered drugs constantly when I went this year. Every time I walked down the street I was offered mushrooms, pseudoephedrine and marijuana. I went to a pharmacist to find some meds and the lady is offering to sell me benzos under the table. I stuck to drinking beer cos I'm not risking my life or freedom in a country that'll happily lock you up for decades or hang you for drug offences.

Attention Bali, nature is now illegal. We want to make sure that we keep an easily way to rise above poverty away from you. Also we couldn't dare let you think in ways we don't tell you.

The local cops will just use it as another way to squeeze a bribe out of you and if you refuse to pay up quickly then you'll get thrown in a Balinese jail for a long time.

They're going to be more impoverished and certainly lose customer tourism money. Bad drug policies not only do damage to you financially or send you to jail, but can economically cripple human beings just trying to make it (even so far as Afghan poppies).
