Rooting Mobile Devices
    #20981985 - 12/15/14 08:52 PM (9 years, 5 months ago)

Guys,

I'm debating on whether or not I should root my Galaxy S4 but I'm hoping I can get some opinions/advise before I do it.

What are the pros and cons?

Do you know of a particular program that works better than others to get root access? Or any apps that I should look into once I do?

I prefer to explore with caution.

First what is your provider?
Second what is your update?
The answer to those questions is your answer whether you should root or not.

After that though, defiantly get clockwork recovery, cyanogen mod, super su, and my personal but kinda expensive favorite system tuner. There are a few more but that is a base system, I like having a different file manager for instance.

What are you looking to do with it though, just make it quicker? Make it look cool, themes, fonts, etc? Privacy?

root it and if you are feeling really ballsy put the goldeneye rom on it.  make sure you read every thing 10 times before romming it.

Samsung Galaxy S4
Model Number: SAMSUNG-SGH-1337
ANDROID VERSION: 4.4.4
Baseband Version: 1337UCFNJ4
Kernel Version: 3.4.0-2960651
SE Android Status: Enforcing SEPF_SAMSUNG-SGH-1337_4.4.4_0032
Secure Boot Status Type: Samsung
Security Software Version: MDF v1.0 Release 3 and VPN v1.4 Release 2

I don't have anything specific that I'd like to do; just see what all it's capable of doing other then what I can do without root. I'll probably look into some of the mods and start out with the ones that are more commonly used then go from there.

So far I have attempted to get root using Towelroot but it was unsuccessful due to a "device not supported" error. From what I understand the modstrings are too up to date.

I'm going to have to roll back to an earlier kernel version or get root some other way.

Hmm I've never dealt with at&t devices so don't know how they are in terms of locking you out.
But the way to do it is to use Odin, or Heimdall, find the rom and recovery you want. Then on the s4 boot into odin mode by holding -volume power and home when the device is off, after the warning, flash the recovery.
After it reboots use android debug bridge to move the rom over, reboot to recovery by holding +volume power and home and flash the rom/google apps using recovery. Done.
I'm sure if you took the bold steps and google'd each individually you will get a better  explanations.
If you want I can make a more in depth guide, but be aware of the warnings that you could brick it.

As for the apps and modifications, the playstore is where the safest apps will be, systemtuner is about $5 and is great for modifying ram values cpu flags and the like, it comes with a way to freeze apps and delete them regardless of dependency so its good for removing bloat or things you don't use. I highly recommend it.

For the modification of cpu/ram values though there is a free option not on the playstore called kTweaker, I have used it a bit and almost prefer it as it has better defaults.

One that is a large project and is good for really anything is xposed framework, it is a library that implements a lot of tools for rooted devices. There are individual modules that allow you to do certain things for instance change fonts, style, and theme, or increase privacy by blocking certain functions called by apps.

Good catch, if you were to use a different recovery you would have to restore from a backup.

Do you know which carriers try to keep you from rooting devices?
Might switch soon and I don't quite dig the cost of the one I know.

they all try to prevent rooting and romming.  my advice right now it buy the htc one m8, they are the best phones and most hacker friendly no matter who your carrier is.

I think I've heard that if you root a samsung device, you can put the same exact rom on it but without all the bullshit samsung and carrier bloat apps. I think that would be cool for my s3.

for the samsung phones with locked bootloaders a touchwiz based rom flashed via safestrap is the only option usually.  unfortunately for many of us that means no cyanogenmod but yea, there are some cleaned up roms that remove the samsung crap and the att crap.  not all the carriers lock the bootloader though so depending on where the phone came from it might have some hope for better options.
