How to de-trich a room
    #20978363 - 12/15/14 07:39 AM (9 years, 5 months ago)

So, I was wondering why half my jars contaminated, so I did a little test. I left some Rye berries out on the table for the weekend. This morning when I got back in, I noticed trich growing on them. I suspect that the room is completely contaminated with them, so what is a good way to clean the room?

I too would like to know the answer to your question.
Sorry i have no valid info.
But i feel it may be impossible to completely  detrich a room unless it is a real "clean room".

I assume you'll want to empty it out, bleach solution the walls and everything.
Run a HEPA, etc. But, most of that is unnecessary, I guess, still a noob, if
you're using a glove box and... preferably... a laminar flow hood.

Probably, someone with more experience will set us straight on this matter.

The room has a HEPA built in, to sanitize any air coming in. There is always a slight positive pressure in the room, so that when coming in and out, contams can't get in the door. That means, the contam began in the room. It had to have been brought in. In the room, is a NASA grade air ionizer, ultra-violet lighting that can be turned on to kill some contams, an ozone generator, and the air purification system. Which ones would I need to clean the room for this contam? Would I need something additional? If needed, I can always jump into a clean suit, and spend the next few weeks decontaminating the room. I just need to know what to do in this case.

What's the floor made of? Walls? Ceiling?

The floor is made up of a high wear carpet (we should have replaced this long ago), the walls are sadly, normal walls, but we are going to be covering them with a new coat that will make it not breath one bit, and the ceiling is made of metal.

Soon, we will be placing a new floor down. Its a hard rubber. We are thinking of adding a plastic floor over that.

Trich spores are already everywhere anyway. Just open the windows and air out the room. Get some fresh are flowing. Occasionally, a good wipe down, sweep and mop is useful, but you don't have to go to any special crazy processes. Just clean it like you would any other part of your house. I generally keep my work/grow room cleaner than the rest of my house, but it's not bleached. Soap and water is your friend. Your technique is what will keep you from growing contamination.

Spitballjedi is totally correct, I'd be terrified to culture a swab from the surfaces where I work. A cheap SAB with some gloves sleeves and alcohol gel has proven sufficient for me.

That said get rid of the carpet. Carpets have nasty, nasty things under them.

This is the problem. We G2Ged over 100 jars, and almost every single one of them got trich. Three got bacteria, and one got that pink stuff, that I haven't memorized the name of yet. It looks pretty cool though! I want to take a swab of the pink, and culture it for art. I'm allowed to bring some stuff like that home.

The G2G was done with no air flow in the room, inside of a SAB. Everything was wiped down with alcohol. The inside of the SAB, the jars, the gloves, everything. The master jars were NOT contaminated. I know this for sure. They were all perfect. I can identify trich by eye, even when its still white.

I hydrated some new rye berries for the test of open air, and they triched like crazy over the weekend. There must be trich all over in the lab. This is really bad, as this lab isn't just for mycology. Mycology is a tiny project in the lab. We are using the myc, as well as the mushrooms, for R&D purposes. I'm not some kid with an pretend lab working out of a bedroom in my parents basement. This is an actual company. A small one with under 50 employees, yes, but a company none the less.

We have been talking about getting rid of the carpet, and getting the better flooring for quite a while. The main problem, is always the company finances. Most projects in the lab, never actually NEEDED the carpet to be taken out, so its been delayed. This problem arising, has given a good reason for us to get the new flooring installed.
