Mushroom ID - Northern California
    #20972362 - 12/13/14 06:19 PM (9 years, 5 months ago)

Dear ladies and gentlemen,

Been hunting for edible mushrooms for long time and am looking into psychedelics.

Can you please help me confirm this variety of mushroom.

I believe they are Psilocybe cyanescens

They were found in the redwood forest of Mendocino county, northern California.

—---—

Species #  Not sure

Habitat: Redwood forest, on sunny patch with grass. Much wood chips and cow dung spread around the area

Gills: wide gills with tan color.

Stem:light in color and has not a veil.

Cap:brown to tan with somewhat wavy edges.

Bruising: I tested them bt not sure how long it takes to be sure they bruise purple/blue/green

General location: Right on top of a patch of fine wood chips. There are dozens growing all in one 15 foot are.

I will conduct a spore patch and have better pictures soon.

Thanks everyone.

Psilocybe Cyanescens won't grow in the Mendocino forest , try checking woodchips in business/residential areas ..( Avoid shredded redwood & look for the nature scapes , or any chips for that matter. If i remember correctly Cyanescens don't fruit on redwood because it has longevity and won't decay. I'm not sure if cyans are saprophytic because I've seen them on Newly laid woodchips and growing from basically dirt .. And "A" woodchip , or even a pinecone, but as far as i know they've never been spotted in the forest without help from human a spawning the area.

they seem to prefer the habitat humans provide , I'm not sure if its a well draining soil , irrigation , new landscapes , consistent traffick , ect.

Your mushrooms might be Tubaria or Gymnopus or something else. Not really sure honestly.

As a sidenote, I believe the grass they are growing next to is nutsedge (Cyperus sp.)

OK, thank guys, I will keep looking.

What variety do you suggest I look for in the inland Mendocino forests? We have many deciduous trees among the redwoods as well. There is plenty of dead fall.

How about around the cow dung?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

California doesn't have the humidity that the southern states like Alabama have so cubes don't grow outdoors. I would definitly be on the look out for chanterelles, lions mane, reishi, chicken of the woods, morels , oysters , any edible or medicinal

If you can make it to the Samoa sand dunes without much effort I would plan a trip because Cyansecens are prevalent around there

What about Amanitas? Those are pretty common around here.

Be careful with Amanita as there are a few look a likes for the muscaria , plus I've read that A.Muscaria is notoriously weak but idk I've never consumed any.

I never seen an A.muscaria before
