Those are outdoor cubes.  Oysters are a great place to start for edibles. If you want immediate results do the pf tek  according to evilmushroom666 is fine or shea25 or mushroom videos or Bodhisatta's writeup.

Grains cost more up front because you will need to purchase a pressure cooker.  Here are my recommendations.

1. PF TEK
-mushroom videos (I already linked it once)
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15223324#15223324
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11585613#11585613

2. Monotub
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19792837

Those are your best options as a beginner.  The only two fruiting chambers worth a shit for a noob are a monotub and a proper shotgun fruiting chamber.

Do some reading man.  You won't make a lot of friends if you continue to ask people to do your homework for you.  I'm not trying to be a dick but in this thread we have given you every bit of information you need to grow mushrooms.  Stick to the stuff posted in this thread and you will do fine.  If you want to do edibles then learn how to make a straw log and put it in a SGFC.  All the answers are in the link in my signature I've already told you to check out once.  Take some initiative and read the stuff we have offered you.

Also this subforum is for actives. If you want someone to teach you to grow gourmet/medicinal mushrooms then go to that section of the site. Oysters are pretty easy from what I've read, but the PF tek is easy as shit too and idiot proof.

I would suggest you try oysters first, I began with them. Rather quick and easy mush to cultivate. As for your questions on live tissue culture (mycelium) and plugs (wooden plugs colonised by myc) you should Research:

Mycelium
Mushroom life cycle
Spores
Etcetera, you see the pattern, google is your friend.

Look up a acronym thread here, it will explain all the...acronyms
Search function ftw

Download mushroom cultivation pdfs and read them.

Do your research with a thought that if you want to do something good you have to understand process behind it.

I have been reading and doing shroom stuff for 7 months now and still haven't posted a single question. Just research all you still don't understand, and most importantly; DO, TRY, FAIL, SUCCEED, LEARN PRACTICALY.
There is no amount of literature that can replace even miniature first hand experience. Happy endeavors!

But seriously though, don't even fuck around. Just start with grains. The PF tek is a whole lot of dicking around for an oz of shrooms.
Bulk growing isn't rocket science, and you yield more. Simple.
Just knock up some grain jars, and crack them into some 50/50.
Boom. simple.

Yes Frank's Teks are good.
But yea, do what tiger said.
But all this info at once is going to overwhelm you.

I would honestly take the advice and start watching the videos.
Cubes are actually going to be easier & faster to grow in my opinion at least.
Especially if you are starting from the ground up (spores).

The PF-Tek gives you a good base of the biology / life cycle of mushrooms and is a relatively easy & inexpensive way to get started, and if you follow the Tek to a "T" you will have success.

I honestly would get a few successful PF grows under your belt, then move onto grains, agar, etc.

Besides, the PF-Tek does not require a pressure cooker. Grains do unless you want to steam for 8 or 12 hours straight.
When you decide you want to continue on with the hobby, then you can invest in a pressure cooker etc.

Here is a link for you:

http://www.mushroomvideos.com/

Hope this helps as well.

PS - I started with the PF-Tek as well and had success on my first try, so anyone else can as well.

I didn't realize that one had to be so sterile when cultivating (I saw a picture of a glove box somewhere, I believe?), this is all very exciting and I can't wait to get started, though I imagine the winter might possibly slow me down).

Spitball, I'm wanting to start out with Shiitake and Dry Land Fish (or Morels/Morchella, as they're actually called). I'm going to go gourmet before I move on to Cubensis.

A SAB is better for mycology and mushroom cultivation than a glovebox.

This particular forum is for hallucinogenic mushrooms. For other mushrooms, you want to post and look in Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms

I've also seen you talk about something you refer to as "agar", in other threads looking around for beginners info.

I assume you're talking about agar-agar, or agar plates as a method of cultivation?

Would you recommend this over the PF tek? If so, do you have any step-by-step instructions on the materials needed for this, and how to go about doing it?

Yes, agar-agar, agar plates. This is not a replacement for PF Tek. Agar is a way to create a clean culture for inoculating grains, PF cakes, and other growing media. When first starting out, you can put spores on agar instead of directly to cakes or grains. This allows you to create a clean culture and reduce contamination for your cakes and grains.

Often, when growing gourmets and medicinals, many people purchase mycelium cultures. These cultures have already been grown on agar and often shipped to you still in the agar petri. Mycelium of mushrooms from hallucinogenics are illegal, so they aren't shipped this way, so you start with spores instead. Most beginners use spores and directly inoculate cakes. However, I recommend You should really start with agar for best chance of a successful grow.

Pastywhyte's Easy Agar Tek is a good beginers way to try agar.

What sort of mushroom did this person grow? They look like cubes, but I'm not sure.

Apparently Shiitake take up to a year to grow, and I would like to see more immediate results since I'm just starting out and want to get into the swing of things.

What is a good gourmet species that grows rather quickly?

Oysters can be grown the same way as cubensis, but that's for Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms Forum

Yeah I'm not asking anyone to do my homework for me at all. I spent a good 3 days digging through this site and many others but the acronyms kept throwing me off and nothing I was looking at made sense.

I was under the impression that the pressure cooker was for sterilization, and the PK tek called for the exact same thing (Evilmushroom's guide calls for it).

I'll go to gourmet too though, thanks

@SBJ: Ah, thank you very much. So the agar method is somewhat of a transplant, it seems.

Again, sorry to bother you guys with all of this. I know it seems like I'm some lazy scrub, but I tried researching all of this on my own coming from a place of pure ignorance and it overwhelmed me very hard.

Ya'll have been golden. I might go pester the good folks over in the gourmet section now, whenever I start growing (hopefully this month) I'll post some pics for anyone interested.

Thanks for helping a noobsauce out.

Nah man, it was some what of a wake up call if anything. I can sit around compiling info for days, but at the end of the day nothing is going to beat the experience of just diving right in and going for the gold.

Which I shall do in the coming days... after I bother the cool cats over in gourmet

Going tomorrow to get some verm. Not sure where to get agar and petri dishes, but this town isn't too big. It has to be around here somewhere, and tomorrow will be a scavenger hunt for supplies anyways.

@Spitball: Do you need a pressure cooker for the agar tek you linked, or will a pot with a tight lid suffice as it does for Evilmushroom666's pf tek?

I take it that you cut out a piece of the mycelium and somehow transfer it into the substrate/cake jar

Grain teks require a pressure cooker, but to me, even that is simpler. It's almost just a guarantee..
Hydrate them (soak)
Boil them, jar them, pressure sterilize them,
And utilize them.
Then spawn them into 50/50 coir/verm "monotubs"
The process is relatively simple, and it's pretty hard to fuck up.

I don't recommend PF cakes.. Ever. Like,
If my dumbass can start in the bulk world, anyone can.
Plus is gives you a little hand at pasteurizing... Which is just another 3 hours over your stove.
