Newbie question on spawn bags/filters/SHIPs

I'm new to spawn bags. I purchased a 1 lb. rye berry spawn bag from Outgrow that says it has a filter patch and a SHIP. Is the SHIP the little black "button" on the bottom of the grains/bag? I thought we were supposed to inject from the top across from the filter patch? (Embarrassing question, I know.)
Also--and I have read conflicting reports on this in other threads--but is 2ccs of MS the right amount for inoculation? Once I inject (and assuming the SHIP is the little black thing on the bottom) should I "aim" the needle and inject on the side of the bag as if I were using a jar?
Any help appreciated. Thank you!

And please don't inoculate the bag with spores.

Why? He's asking about the self healing injector port.
If he bought a bag with a SHIP then he's probably using spores.
Don't forget to flame sterilize your needle before you inject. Do NOT wipe it with alcohol after.

Saralove, I know what SHIP stands for--but I have never seen one like the one on the bag I have and am just trying to confirm that the black thing is actually the SHIP

I'm going to start moving away from MS soon. Am going to try LC but then will be moving on to agar I think after that if I can.

You can move to agar first and make LI using a blender.

Without experience. He's just as likely to contaminate his grow with agar.
There is value in keeping things simple with syringe-MS grows.

It can also be his first screwed grow for keeping things simple. He seems like a smart guy, anyone can learn agar without screwing anything, working with agar is not that hard, basically the only thing he needs is to learn sterile procedures in the SAB.
Besides if he can manage to make a LC or LI syringe from an agar wedge, He can test the liquid solution in agar before injecting it to the spawn bag. So basically he will end up having less chances to screw things, taking the dirty spores factor out and that you know the Liquid solution is clean, the only chances left to screw it is un-sterile procedures at the inoculation time or if the grains failed to complete sterilisation.

And also, knowing that you can isolate healthy myc away from contams, is hard to screw it with agar.
A few agar dishes contaminated is not a big fail, a 2 lb grain spawn bag it is. It just take some extra steps to guarantee a clean liquid solution. Is just my .

It is the SHIP.
I would stick the needle in a little and squirt the spores in. Do not go trying to twist the needle after injecting in an attempt to be injecting right on the side of the bag. You risk damaging the SHIP and risk bursting the bag. By sticking the needle in just a small but its going to fall on grains near the side of the bag, so you can see growth. If you stuck the needle far it would squirt deep in the grains and growth will be hidden from view.

Thanks for the help. One more question: do I need to pull the plastic apart at all to allow good air flow through the filter? (Not break the plastic open, just to allow the bag to "breath."). I think the answer is no but just want to confirm.

Sure, although GE will still happen either way. If you are going to use spores do not shake the bag to mix the spores, the spores have to be close together so they can find mates easily.
