horse manure compost
    #20969078 - 12/12/14 10:18 PM (9 years, 5 months ago)

ive looked around some about horse manure compost. i couldn't find what i was looking for. what needs to be in it or not to be in it? and where would be the best place to order or buy or even a brand name that ppl trust/like? (if any)
i am going to mix it with some lime, gypsum, a brick of coir and verm (not actul measurements) this mix is from franks 12 steps http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19792837
thank you.

You wouldn't need any lime for that mix. Also, you want field aged manure, not composted manure. Composted manure, if bought, will probably cost more because it's a process of altering the poop into something 'new' which requires human intervention and resources. If you have any horse farms in your area they'll give you some or allow you to gather as much of it as you can carry.

Most manure is going to work for you, some might be too strong just by itself though, but horse and cow and both good. I'd suggest fluffing them up with vermiculite though. You can also just use coir or coir + verm which is what I would do if I couldn't get any manure although you shouldn't have any trouble, I have made about 5 or 6 contacts over the years and tend just just keep a large pile in my yard to ensure it's always in a good condition to use.

Have luck with sheep manure as well.

Another source for horse-poo is local 4-H horse stables. Most counties have one. We have a couple in the area, and they give all their manure away for use as fertilizer.

i found a source that claims to not have shavings or urine and is free in my area. is laying the poo out on tarps for a few days the only way to prep it for uses? i don't have the room or the place to do that. after prep, i planned on storing it in 2: 5 gal. buckets with lids. or should i try for something else?

Not sure what you mean by this.

Why don't you just ask your source if you can designate a spot on their property and just leech it there? I doubt you're operation requires a large amount of poo. a 3'x 3' area to leech should be more than enough. If you don't have the means to do it at your residence then this may be a good option for you. You certainly don't want moist dung inside your house. Unless of course you're into that sort of thing.

There are users here that will sell composted manure for a cheap cost. PM me if interested and I'll refer you.
