Where to begin, maaaan.

Mycology is something I'm greatly interested in, always has been. The thing is, when it comes to actually growing mushrooms, I'm afraid I am entirely in the dark... entirely.
I've been reading a few of the FAQ threads around this joint, but it seems like some pretty "advanced" stuff relative to my ignorance on the subject. I see words like "PFtek" and "cake" and "strain", I see pictures of people growing shrooms in what appears to be jars (I always assumed they could be grown in little gardens outside or in aquariums), and it's a bit overwhelming coming from a place of absolute ignorance.
If a fella like me with zero knowledge about mushrooms, their life cycles, the very basics of how to grow them, how to avoid contaminants etc wanted to get into this, where would I start?
As I said, all of the FAQ's around here are clearly for people with a solid knowledge of cultivation already, so what I'm referring to here is Mycology 101, for absolute noobs.
Please point me in the direction to as many videos, websites, pdf's and pretty much everything else you can think of to help me build a foundation for being knowledgeable on all things mushroom and mushroom cultivation.
Basically, Pretty Woman me, but with mushrooms and cultivation
Thank you SO very much in advance.
PS. I'm not necessarily talking about cubensis, here. I would like to work up to that eventually, but for now I simply want to learn how to grow gourmet mushrooms. Specifically, Shiitake and something my old man calls "Dry Land Fish", which he swears is something he used to eat as a kid that was pretty amazing.

^Is this the place you're talking about? Seems legit, but it also seems as if these videos only show how to make "cakes" (which is substrate, I'm guessing?), and doesn't show how to inject the *spores, or plugs or whatever. Also, how do one come to access this vermiculite stuff?
*I've heard that only psilocybin mushrooms use spores, while other mushrooms use plugs. I have no idea how true this is because again I am an absolute noob so lol.
Thanks for that link though, I greatly appreciate it. Keep the info comin'!

If you want to grow cubenses, you'll likely start with spores.

Yes. There are 4 brf/PF videos on there that walk you through the exact way to do it for free. If you follow that tek (TO A T) and get spores from a reputable sponsor on here, you will succeed. Don't forget to show us pictures.

Yeah but realistically we only start with cubensis spores because they are legal to possess and sell.
If you look at edible and exotic fungus they almost always sell live tissue cultures.

More awesome info, thanks much!
Do these same rules apply for all types of mushrooms, even gourmet?

Colonize plugs with spores? Where can I read more on this, I'm not sure what a plug is. (sorry that all of my questions are so annoying, but again, tooootal noob here trying to learn haha)

Live tissue cultures? What are these, and how do they differ from spores and plugs or what have you in their grow method? Do you know where I can read more on this?

Preparing grain spawn What to do with that spawn? Coir prep Tek
Know you want to do monotubs right away?
Frank's 12 steps to shrooms (a mono tek for beginners)
Monotubs/Grain spawn How to get started
1. Make grain spawn WBS is used in the TEK(I use rye) Frank's WBS Prep (perfect every time)
2. If you want to expand your grain jars without individual inoculation use G2G transfers Grain to grain in a SAB Also TL's take on G2G with video
3. Now you should have colonized grain spawn, time to make a bulk substrate to spawn to. Frank's Simple Coir/Verm Tek I personally use coir Frank's hpoo substrate, revisited poo works too
4. That substrate has to be pasteurized, here's some info to clear up any confusion about pasteurization Frank's Proper Pasteurization Tek 3.0
5. Ok you have spawn and bulk substrate, time to mix them Frank's Bulk Spawning Tek (in a monotub)
6. Additional monotub info for best results How to dial in your monotubs like a boss

There are many grains you can use for your bulk substrate. I have used Rye and WBS and follow RogerRabbit's Rye tek and 6T's WBS tek to a T with great results.
6T WBS Tek (No Simmer/Easy Tek)
Quote:
RogerRabbit said: My rye tek: Measure out your organic rye berries from a health food store, one cup for each quart jar you intend to make. Place them in a large pot. Rinse the heck out of them. Fill the pot with hot tap water, shake and swirl it around and pour it out. Do this three or four times until the water you pour out is clear. You'll be able to see when you have nice clean water to pour off instead of water filled with chaff and dirt.
You want to now cover the rye berries with three times as much hot tap water as you have rye. Use half coffee and half plain water. In other words, if you have two inches of rye in the bottom of your pan, you should have six inches of water/coffee above that, for a total of 8 inches. Add approximately a 1/4 teaspoon of gypsum per cup of rye. Stir these into the water/grain well. For my large kettle with ten cups of rye and two to three gallons of water, or (coffee/water)I add a tablespoon of gypsum and mix in. Cover and leave this to sit for 6-24 hours.
Stir well and set the pot on the stove. Bring to a boil. Boil for ten minutes, then, WHILE BOILING, drain the contents through a very large colander. (spaghetti strainer) If you're making a large batch, you may need more than one colander. Tip the colander side to side to get the rye to drain as much of the water as you can. Then, shake the colander in order to 'toss' the grain. This will cause a lot of steam to rise from your rye. Great. Do this a time or two, then let it sit for five minutes, then repeat. When all the moisture that will drip or evaporate from your rye has already done so, load your jars. The rye should look and feel dry to the touch when you load the jars. All the moisture you need is inside the grain.
Fill jars no more than 2/3 full if they are to receive grain to grain transfers, or no more than 3/4 full if they are to be inoculated by spore syringe or agar wedge. Use a lid with a synthetic filter disk, polyfill, tyvek or similar. Cover with foil and PC the jars for at least 90 minutes at 15lbs. I use 120 minutes. When the jars are cool, they're ready to inoculate.
This is the procedure that's demonstrated on my DVD. RR
Now that you know what you're doing you'll want to expand your knowledge. See that derailed you. Focus on what spitball Jedi posted and mushroom videos. Learn the step by step guides then it all becomes clear. 4 months ago I had never grown a mushroom, and now I've got a dry pound in my closet! Focus on PF tek to learn the cycle of mushrooms, then jump to bulk, unless you want to read a lot. I've still never done a PF tek grow, but I did a lot of homework before I started growing. If you check the link in my signature that says "click me if you're new", you will find Bodhisatta's write ups, spitball jedi's write ups, and many other GREAT resources. Don't pay attention to what I say as much as paying attention to the writeups.

Thank you all very much. I know my questions are noobsauce as fuck, but this is all extremely helpful and I think the information ITT is all I'll need starting out!
I didn't realize that one had to be so sterile when cultivating (I saw a picture of a glove box somewhere, I believe?), this is all very exciting and I can't wait to get started, though I imagine the winter might possibly slow me down).
Spitball, I'm wanting to start out with Shiitake and Dry Land Fish (or Morels/Morchella, as they're actually called). I'm going to go gourmet before I move on to Cubensis.

Best info for a noob. You can see what's being done. Pause, rewind. These vids helped me more than anything.
Once you do the very basics you'll have a better understanding and then can move on to more advanced stuff.

Spitball:
I've also seen you talk about something you refer to as "agar", in other threads looking around for beginners info.
I assume you're talking about agar-agar, or agar plates as a method of cultivation?
Would you recommend this over the PF tek? If so, do you have any step-by-step instructions on the materials needed for this, and how to go about doing it?

Look at franks shit. But seriously though, don't even fuck around. Just start with grains. The PF tek is a whole lot of dicking around for an oz of shrooms. Bulk growing isn't rocket science, and you yield more. Simple. Just knock up some grain jars, and crack them into some 50/50. Boom. simple.

Is the grain tek any more complicated than the pf tek? What do you do differently, as far as the steps in 666's very well put together guide? Just a different substrate recipe? I believe Frank's article said something about "WBS", but it never really says what "WBS" is.
I would prefer to grow more than just a few mushrooms, that is true.
Also, what exactly are the "plugs" and "live tissue cultures" in the context of growing? Google isn't exactly helping me out here much.

What sort of mushroom did this person grow? They look like cubes, but I'm not sure.
Apparently Shiitake take up to a year to grow, and I would like to see more immediate results since I'm just starting out and want to get into the swing of things.
What is a good gourmet species that grows rather quickly?
