Cross-platform encrypted texting

I have a unique situation with a client, and I'm looking for a way to communicate with him in a secure fashion. He is an apple fanboi, and I am Android. I'd like for it to be text, but if it's some instant messaging app, that works, too. I just need it to be encrypted so that it's invisible to prying eyes.
Anyone know of a solution?

The easiest way would be Snapchat. You can video chat via Snapchat and none of it is recorded, everyone that's say 30 and under seem to have it these days, and you won't have to bother typing everything out on your phone. https://support.snapchat.com/a/video-chat
I'm just trying to make your life easier here, but if you insist on sending text messages that are encrypted remember that they're still on your phone if someone wanted to try a bruteforce attack, and messages can still be retrieved from your filesystem even if you delete them.

It's not really that great, and better encrypted clients should be coming to iOS soon, but for now I think the best secure, cross-platform, instant messaging app would be surespot.
Once it's available for iOS, I'd go with TextSecure instead.
SnapChat can't really be considered a secure client. I wouldn't recommend it for this particular purpose.

That's fair, I'm definitely making a few assumptions about the scope of the privacy his client is trying to obtain because of his mentioning his recent change in clientele. I'm assuming ideas are being protected from prying eyes. If so I think a combination of both suggestions could be used, texts for short conversations and video for more detailed discussions when both parties are in private locations.

I will try surespot. Thanks for the help.
Cutless: I'm not terribly worried about that, because a client is far more likely to leak that information than some text message. This is for a very specific situation where a government agency is certainly watching and has the resources to monitor text and phone. Communications between the client and myself are privileged, but shit happens.

I suggest PGP. The free version is GPG, one or both of you could use that.
It is cross platform and very secure. It's also nice and professional.

I downloaded a app called whistle, where you can call or text people using a ipad instead of your phone, so its like more protection. So your not using your real number or your real phone.

Try Wickr
https://www.wickr.com/
Wickr has been described not only as being more secure than other messaging apps, but also as being a “more user-friendly messaging app.
The "self-destruct" part of the software is designed to use a "Secure File Shredder" which the company says "forensically erases unwanted files you deleted from your device".[15] However the company uses a proprietary algorithm to manage the data, a practice which is prone to error according to many security experts.[1] On January 15, 2014, Wickr announced it is offering a US$100,000 bug bounty for those who find vulnerabilities that significantly impact users.[16] In addition, a recipient can in general use other software and techniques like screen-capture capabilities or a separate camera to make permanent copies of the content.

I'd use something like ChatSecure which supports the recommended OTR protocol over XMMP. It is supported on iOS and Android.
Here's a list maintained by the EFF with an overview of various programs and their issues/benefits:

One word: Wickr.
Deletes messages on a timed basis, encrypted and password protected for each message.

Listen to naum. The OTR protocol is provably secure, so you just have to find a trustworthy implementation. The EFF list is a great place to start, though I'm a little dubious of their claim that TextSecure has had a code audit. To my knowledge, it was just a protocol audit that happened late last year.

check out an application called Textsecure. If you and your client both have Textsecure and exchange keys with each other, then it will be encrypted.
you could also have a PGP application on your phone, and encrypt your message through the PGP application, and paste the encrypted text into your text message and send it that way.
Personally, I would not bother texting each other and use a website like http://www.safe-mail.net/ and encrypt all your messages through PGP. But given your requirements your best bet would be to use something like Textsecure. IF you want to take it step further, use textsecure and encrypt your messages using a third-party PGP application and send the encrypted text through textsecure.
The cool thing about Textsecure is that you can use it as an encrypted storage container for your SMS messages.
You could also use something like Pidgin+OTR. Bitmessage is pretty neat, but I would encrypt your messages with PGP if using Bitmessage

I like Wickr, but I don't know if that's available on Apple. It's encrypted messaging that self destructs on a timer that you can set.
I use Android

Since I wrote that post I've pretty much forgotten all I knew about Bitmessage, but I believe I wrote what I did for the following reason. Bitmessage is incredibly new, and although it uses pretty secure underlying encryption technologies, the security of Bitmessage itself hasn't been audited. Due to this, there are potentially severe vulnerabilities that are not yet known, or are known by government agencies, so encrypting the message you send provides an additional layer of security.
Also, lets say someone compromised the device that the recipient of your message was using to receive your message, if you didn't use PGP encryption they could see your message, however if you did use PGP encryption it would provide an additional layer of security.
In reality, you are probably safe not encrypting your message before you send it, but it isn't a bad idea as it requires very little time, and adds an additional layer of security.
If you're using Bitmessage, you're using it for a particular reason, which is probably something you dont want to be identified for, so adding extra security just helps.

TextSecure became Signal, and it's now the standard for open source, encrypted messaging on mobile. It works on iOS and Android, and as a desktop browser plugin. It's from Moxie Marlenspike's company, who is a very well respected security researcher and cryptographer. Take a look.
