There's a whole bunch more to this conversation than first meets the eye.

Think about this, what's the difference between "Fucking" and "intercourse"? "Cunt" and "vagina"? "Penis" and "Cock"? "Feces" and "shit"? Well for a start while each describe something "profane" in each case the former is itself a "dirty word" rather than a polite word used to describe something dirty. What's with that?

Well one thing that you'll notice is that the "dirty" words all have multiple syllables and soft endings: deriving from a Latin root (generally, I think, via France.)

Well this just isn't true.

I think it is a very situational thing. Depends on the group, the context, and the subject.

If you can articulate your self well anyway, I don't think swearing takes away anything when used in the right context, and when it is used in the right context if anything It gets your point across better and stronger, because they have a bigger impact (maybe due to their stigmatization) & give what your saying that little bit more intensity that you need when regular words just don't describe what your feeling strong enough.

The way/time you use the words is important, and I keep on going back to using the words how they should be (IMO) IE NOT like this -

I mostly cuss in 2 distinct siutations. One is I'm frustrated and can't quite figure out what word it is I'm looking for "Can you get me that... fucking.... uh.. HAMMER?" The other is when I'm just pissed off. "Fuck this stupid fucking bitch I want to gouge out her eyes with plastic spoons and skull fuck her until her head falls off and then shit down her throat".

I swear regularly, some people don't like it, but most people don;t mind and swear themselves, even with professionals, after maybe 10 minutes together we're both comfortable enough to be swearing while we're talking (used in the right way) to each-other because like I said, sometimes regular words, no matter how 'articulate' they are, just aren't enough.

I agree it has, to some extent, have to with class. Good post Fromthewild, I find It's the posher, higher classed people who are the ones against swearing.

But then maybe swearing is for the people, and it always will be, whether or not some uptight bastards like it or not!

Context is key, but as I get older I approve of it less and less.  If there is a comic on television using foul language I change the channel because I consider the comic to be lazy.

immoral? no. but excessive cursing as well as not knowing when to turn it off makes you look like trash.

Yeah I added a little to my post about context. You are right, it is key. So is the Intent behind using such words. I feel using it to make a stronger point or similar is much more acceptable than using it to portray negative feelings against a person ie 'that fucking bitch ...;, because those feelings could be expressed a lot better with 'regular' (& I use that term loosely) words, not needing to swear every sentence; But then the odd swearword also just gets your point across like 'those bastards...'

People with bad arguments only say curse word taking a way from an argument as a distraction from their own arguments.

I tend to unconsciously adjust my language depending on whos around me and what I'm talking about. If I'm speaking to a customer or my boss at work you'll never hear anything remotely resembling the words 'fuck, ass, shit, cunt, damn, etc' come out of my mouth. Definitely tend to swear far less when I'm talking about things I enjoy like music or literature as well...but when my coworkers annoy me or I'm with my friends or talking about something that makes me angry (politics being a key one), I tend to swear like a sailor. Never been one of those people that have to drop a curse word into every sentences though...those people I tend to automatically assume are dumbasses with nothing useful to add to any given conversation.

I'm fully capable of having an in-depth, intelligent conversation with someone without swearing but most of the time I don't see any reason to limit myself to 'sounding smart'. Especially since 'sounding smart' generally comes at the cost of occasionally having to stop, mid-thought, to explain to someone what a word you just used means or where a phrase you quoted came from or whatever.

Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."

Context is key, I think that it can convey a lot of emotion if you use it right.

Like saying "I fucking love you" can really pack a punch...

But I think a lot of times people use curse words out of apathy or just ignorance of the ability to think of better words. Like saying...

"That was fucking cool" you could say that was..astonishing, astounding, surprising, stunning, staggering, shocking, startling, stupefying, breathtaking etc...

Yes.  I am okay with a little bit of cussing if a person is mad or agitated, but incorporating it into their everyday talking is too much and stupid.

If a person is mad or agitated every day then something is probably wrong with them.
