Boundary Waters Canoe Area
    #20918514 - 12/02/14 05:37 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I'm planning a surprise trip with my Dad to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Both of us are comfortable with hiking, camping, canoeing, etc. so I'm not really interested in a guided trip.

Between the two of us, we have the major camping/hiking gear we would need. However, we will need to rent a canoe, pick an entry point, and plan on where we should travel.

It's pretty overwhelming trying to pinpoint where we should plan to travel once we're there. Is there anyone on here who has been to BWCA and could offer any tips or suggestions on how to make it a memorable trip?

I personally have never done it so I unfortunately do not have any advice for you, but being from IL know a handful of people who have experienced the Boundary Waters and have had nothing but great things to say.  I hope to plan a trip in the next couple years before I move out of the area.  Now that I think about it, I should probably get going on that this spring/summer.

Oh and be careful when you go with bug season in mind.  My last roommate said the last time he went the bugs were absolutely horrible on the water.  He said it made it hard to enjoy because they were so bad.

Thanks for the advice about the bugs. I have a few month window when I can plan the trip so I'll keep that in mind. Mosquitoes really can take away the enjoyment from camping.

I'm in the same situation as you, as I too will be moving away from the area and want to enjoy it while I still live closer.

If you go later in the summer you will miss the black flies.

We've paddled the Allagash River the last week in June for the past 8 years and I've used bug dope just 3 times and it's always been in the morning loading out.

We use this type of burning stick around the campsite at night with 100% success.

It's called deploying the defenses with my grandson. Set them out all the way around the perimeter for light or shifting winds or group them up wind for a moderate/directional wind.

Plan a pack a day.

Edit:

These are the ones we use.

Contact Voyager North Canoe Outfitters in Ely, MN. They have good prices on canoe rentals and anything else you may need. Tell them what you would like to experience (scenery, fishing, large lakes, creeks, wolves, etc.), the physical level, voyage vs. base camp, pictographs and waterfalls. They can help you plan your adventure and secure the necessary entry permits. They are great folks to work with. Good paddling!

Thanks EAP.

In your opinion are the extra costs associated with the outfitter worth it? Are the permits harder to get by yourself?

At this point we have chosen a few routes we'd like to go and will focus mostly on fishing and trying to camp in some remote sites. I'll definitely check out your recommendation above.

Scrim,

An outfitter can help you fill in any gaps in equipment, food, or permits. Their equipment is generally new and in very good shape and has been selected for quality and suitability for the BW. We rented a kevlar canoe from them the last time we went and it was definitely worth it. Most can also supply you with food, customizing a menu if you have special dietary needs. You can always do this all for yourself. They are nice to use if you feel that you don't have everything that you need.

Check out the website www.bwca.com for a mountain of help from great folks with a real passion for BWCA.

I know you will have the time of your life up there, regardless of how you want to approach it.

On another point that you mentioned, the last time we went, we chose to canoe the western region of the BWCA and chose a route putting in at entry point 14 and looping to take out at EP16. The western region has not been affected by wildfires like the eastern regions and proved to be a great choice. We moved camp every day and caught fish everywhere we went. When were you planning on going? We opted for the last week in May to try and miss the various waves of bugs and were generally successful.

We are targeting early June due to our schedules.

I'll check your points on the map. I hadn't heard about the wildfires, so I'll take a look at the western portion with that in mind.
