Do you think cusssing and curse words take away from articulate coversation?
    #20964972 - 12/12/14 01:48 AM (9 years, 5 months ago)

I've cussed like a sailor(with friends) since I was 15 and I have a very articulate vocabulary and to this day I like to use it. However words like Fuckin,Damn,Bitch,Shit,(racial slurs) and other cuss words have replaced so much of my vocabulary because it fucking applies to a lot of shit and much easier to convey then
"It can be used in a cornucopia of different situations and words like fucking gets points across to people easier".

I don't think it's wrong to cuss but it certainly makes it so you don't have to think of more complicated words and form more conversation. Plus I accidently say it to professionals I work with SOMETIMES and I say fuck every once in a while when I'm with my family.

Do you think it's rude or immoral to cuss a lot?

I swear a lot in certain situations, but I like to think I have a decent vocabulary and can articulate my points just fine if I have to. I have realized more that while there are situations where it's okay to swear (say a bar), there may be people around who are still uncomfortable with it. I mean... I knew that already, because my dad is that type of person (I've never heard him swear and I've only sworn in front of him a handful of times), but I guess I'm better at figuring out if there are people around who don't think it's okay to be all "fuck this fuck that" and think I'm an idiot because I'm swearing a lot.

IMO it's an inconvenient habit if you're around kids or uptight people, but if you're around people who can handle their shit than cuss it the fuck up. I like cussing. My grandpa always said that cussing was a substitute for a good vocabulary, but I like to think that both can be employed in fucking concert. :cookiemonster:

Eh, there are times where it's fitting and times where it isn't. It depends entirely on the situation, for me.

But I can articulate myself just fine with and without using curse words.

I'm not offended by cursing and I do it sometimes but it's extremely annoying to be around people who swear constantly over little things.

The people I know who constantly swear also over-exaggerate tons of things too so maybe that's why they're so fucking annoying.

Fuck is one of my favorite words and I use it all day long. Sometimes I feel like "the history of the f-word" was created just for people like me. I pretty much use it in every way imaginable.

I mostly cuss in 2 distinct siutations. One is I'm frustrated and can't quite figure out what word it is I'm looking for "Can you get me that... fucking.... uh.. HAMMER?" The other is when I'm just pissed off. "Fuck this stupid fucking bitch I want to gouge out her eyes with plastic spoons and skull fuck her until her head falls off and then shit down her throat".

I use them in other situations, but those 2 make up the vast majority of them.

They're only words. I don't view them as negative. Yeah it can be rude, but it can also be innocuous. In today's day and age, more and more people are getting offended by more and more stupid shit.. So I really don't give a fuck if someone takes my cursing as offensive.

:derail:

You know the other day, some woman campaigned to our District offices to have certain wrapping paper taken down because we were glorifying Nazis and shit.. One of them was just little squares with lines in them that I guess if you were looking for you could maybe kind of understand why it would look like a swastika, but even then it's a stretch. It actually looked like those brick patios where they put 2 bricks one way, then another 2 rotated at a 90 degree angle. We also had to remove paper that had a snow flake on it because she said it was the star of David. She apparently called up her minister over the incident and was very upset at it. It was just fucking ridiculous. Bitch is crying over the phone and going to her minister about wrapping paper designs that only hold the slightest resemblance to 'offensive symbols', in this case one being a star and the other being squares.

Shit if I had my way, we'd of used that paper to cover the stores walls in. Just to show how much I don't give a fuck about her insanely crazy assertions.

I curse a lot just because it's just how I grew up. It's also a part of my accent and I have to force myself to avoid using certain words in formal situations.

I don't believe it devalues the point I'm trying to make because I still use sophisticated words, just with a 'fuck' here and there.
I think it can blur the point I'm trying to make if I'm talking to someone who isn't used to that kind of language and it can be somewhat intimdating or considered "thugish".

There's a whole bunch more to this conversation than first meets the eye.

Think about this, what's the difference between "Fucking" and "intercourse"? "Cunt" and "vagina"? "Penis" and "Cock"? "Feces" and "shit"? Well for a start while each describe something "profane" in each case the former is itself a "dirty word" rather than a polite word used to describe something dirty. What's with that?

Well one thing that you'll notice is that the "dirty" words all have multiple syllables and soft endings: deriving from a Latin root (generally, I think, via France.)

When the Normans (from Normandy) invaded England, they set themselves up as the ruling class (an example of race and class and culture "intersecting"). Their language became the language of "high/polite society".

Think about this "Beef", "lamb" and "pork" are also French words (for the people at the table in the big house). "Cow", "Sheep" and "pig" are old Gaelic/Germanic/old-English words - for the people out in the fields working with the living animals.

So the point is that the problem with swearing isn't about sex or hygiene or whatever, it's about class.

When we swear, we're saying something about ourselves: That we're not push cunts.

Peace.
