Fungi of Sherwood Forest
    #2096451 - 11/12/03 09:00 AM (20 years, 4 months ago)

Famous around the world as the legendary home of Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest, at the heart of Nottinghamshire, has fascinated visitors since Victorian times.

The Major Oaks great hollow interior that Robin Hood was reputed to have used as a hideaway is not man-made, it is actually caused by fungi, the most invasive of which is called the "poor man?s Beefsteak" (Fistulina hepatica) whose fruiting bodies are sometimes seen growing on the bark of the tree during the Autumn.

Sherwood means shire wood and the forest sometimes used to be referred to as Nottingham Forest. It was once one of the largest of about 90 Royal forests, which at their greatest extent in the 13th Century covered around a third of England.

Anyway, enough of the history lesson already.. Here?s some pics from the hunt !

Pleurotus ostreatus (Oyster mushroom)

Sparassis crispa (The cauliflower mushroom, The dream mushroom)

Griffola frondosa (Maitake, Hen of the woods, The dancing mushroom)

Very nice.

Were you focusing on edibles, or are they just what was around?

Happy mushrooming!

Nice one Bio, I was up at Newark not so long ago (around about the time Forest got beat 2-1 at home by Cardiff City)

I wanted to check out the forest but never got round to it!

Kudos

I was focusing more on edibles really Toxicman. I did find many other interesting species but ran out of film !

All of the above were cloned onto PSYA but unfortunately the Griffola frondosa didn't make it despite several attempts  :frown:
