Provided by the Offices of Senator Charles Perry

Today, Senator Charles Perry filed SB 199 to prohibit the sale and use of synthetic drugs in the State of Texas.

In previous Sessions, the legislature has passed similar bans, but manufactures have repeatedly changed the chemical makeup of their drugs to skirt the law.

“In shops across the state, dangerous synthetic drugs are being sold to our youth, over the counter without repercussions,” Senator Charles Perry said. “These drugs are unregulated and more dangerous than the illegal counterparts they seek to imitate.”

Due to the complex chemical combinations, these substances have been known to produce side effects including hallucination, severe agitation, elevated heart rate and/or blood pressure, chest pains, blackouts, tremors, seizures, cardiac infarction, and in some cases death.

This has to be the most vague article of all time.

"Today, Senator Charles Perry filed SB 199 to prohibit the sale and use of synthetic drugs in the State of Texas."

Banning synthetic drugs? So they are banning all synthetic pharmaceuticals and over the counter medication? No more Tylenol, cough medicine, pain pills, etc.?  You get my point. Saying they are banning synthetic drugs is almost as vague ad saying they are banning "pills". Tell us what they are banning dammit!

perhaps a stepping stone to marijuana legalization?

Politicians are to dumb to make the connection of how this is a prime example of a failing war on drugs.

Yeah all they see is that there are dangerous drugs, and all they know how to do is keep banning them.

All this 'synthetic' bullshit is mainly about the stupid 'synthetic marijuana' label and the health problems associated with those and random 'bath salts'. Honestly I feel a majority of the ER visits probably have some to do with the bath salt end of the spectrum and people denying snorting powder and blaming it all on the 'synthetic marijuana' since that sounds less 'bad' than imitation coke or meth, even though I don't think the smoking compounds are all that safe either as there has been little experience with those new chemicals.
