Hi.
My name is William, and I want to start a business growing mushrooms.
The EDIBLE kind, just to be clear.
Oysters to begin with, branching out into gourmet stuff, Kings, Lion’s Mane, etc.
We have a building I can use and enough shade to start outside on a shoestring using the bucket in bucket technique.
I have a lot of ideas I’d like to discuss if anyone’s interested in Mad Science as it applies to mushroom cultivation.
I saw a Reishi farm that used tubing and stacked them in rows like cordwood.
They fruited off the ends of the tubes after full colonization.
That’s an efficient use of space, which would be a premium for indoor growing next winter.
I was wondering if Oysters could be done that way. What ratio of length of tube to diameter...
Would the mycelium be content to feed the full length of the tube and fruit only from the open end where the light and oxygen hits it?
Compared to vertical tubes, would this result in a) the same yields over a longer time or b) lower yields because of lower surface area ?
I thought maybe using perforated PEX or PVC pipe in the tube would work to increase air exchange.
You’d dip the pipe in bleach overnight, and slide it inside the tube before you fill it.
The open end of the pipe would allow in air the full length of the tube with an air filter on the cap.
Maybe it sounds like a lot of trouble to set up, but the perforated pipe sticks would be re-usable forever; the mycelium shouldn’t be able to digest plastic and you’d bleach them between uses.
Make a dozen sticks per day, and eventually you’d have all you ever needed for a mushroom farm.
Maybe between flushes, you could pull the cap off the end and rehydrate the substrate by pouring distilled or RO water down the pipe.
I also thought that if I could find Tyvek tape on a roll, I could sew my own vinyl tubing with the Tyvek in the exposed seam. (I already know my industrial machine can sew any plastic film 6 mil or thicker.)
That would allow air exchange the entire length of the tube.

And it turns out you can buy Tyvek off eBay for a very cheap price.
Price by the foot from a 54 inch roll is $1.70 or so.

Sorry, when I tried the “Getting Started” forum, I got nothing. Finally someone suggested the Pub might have someone willing to chat about ideas.
