A Couple Grain Questions...
    #20957765 - 12/10/14 03:01 PM (9 years, 5 months ago)

Hi Guys!

I just have a couple of questions about working with a particular brand of grain...

I recently noc'd up some jars of rye berries, and have been going through my head to see if I missed anything. Now I'm wondering about Bob's Red Mill Rye Berries. I know I should have checked before, but I used all the grain in the bag, (and then promptly threw it down the trash chute) without making sure they were "organic". I went to the website and as far as I can tell Bob's Red Mill doesn't sell a non-organic rye berry.........but, if I am wrong, please correct me, 'cause I generally don't know shit.

The thing that got me thinking about it, was my last disastrous attempt at grains and how nothing really worked on that first run. I've changed a few things, but I'm still using the same grain. I read an old post where a fellow was having trouble with this brand. Has anyone else experienced problems using this Bob's Red Mill Rye Berries brand?

And yes, I have already FOTTSE...

It doesn't matter if it's organic. All that means is that it will cost more. They will grow fine.

Edit. I doubt the brand caused his problems. Rye berries are the berries. More likely moisture or his culture.

A lot of people have been having trouble with rye lately. I've personally never used it but yeah. Bob's red mill stuff is pretty expensive. I just go with the cheapest, conventionally grown grains I can get.

That's very cool new fellas... I feel better already!

Hey while I have your attention, one more question on the same subject. Is it still prescribed to roll the jar after inoculation to spread the spore around in the jar, or do you just leave it run down the side of the jar and not agitate it?

Thanks for taking the time for me guys.:sunny:

When using a spore syringe don't shake until at least 30% colonized.

You don't need to shake your jars until there's some decent growth in there. Shaking after you get some good growth gives you more inoculation points.

Well, it's too late for that to happen. Should I just shitcan the jars now and start over, or do you think there might be a chance for them to colonize properly?

FYI: I didn't shake them, but I rolled each one.

You're fine. Just don't shake them again until they're at about 30%
