Any edibles that'll grow in a SGFC.
    #20957376 - 12/10/14 01:26 PM (9 years, 5 months ago)

Hello,

I've got a low humidity problem and have been unsuccessful at growing edibles. I was wondering if any of you have been successful at growing edibles in a shotgun fruiting chamber?

Growing mycellium on wheat, no problem, pastuerizing straw, easy. Colonizing it in straw bags, no problems there either, but as soon as I fruit, they dry right up.

I mist, but I can't mist more than twice a day because of work. I just don't have the time to take care of them quite as much as I'd like.

So fruiting chamber filled with perlite, that's what I got, any body have any ideas?

Got enough perlite and did you put enough holes? Some pictures might help

Here's some pics. The chamber doesn't have any polyfil at the moment and I'm going to put down another inch or so. I'm also going to post a pic of greenhouse.

Believe it or not I've put the oyster's in the greenhouse with the cool mist and perlite at the bottom. Yeah I've watched RR videos/setup but still can't get high enough humidity.

During the day the greenhouse humidity gets too high, my guess is its by the window, shade open

The reason I say this is because morning humidity levels are fine. Maybe just need to tweak the set up?

Im just starting into the world of edibles.. but from what i see your sfgc doesnt look like one i would suspect fae problem . From what i heard Edibles like oyster needs alot of fae , Defininetly make a regular sgfc

from my experience with cubes 4 inch of hydrated perlite gives near 100 % humidity . we only mist and fan to make evaporation at the surface of the sub to trigger pinning

Also maybe something to do with temperature i heard to make oyster pin you need a temperature of atleast 16 degree celcius something like that

PS: just curious how do you know you need more humidity ? and do you put your tub in your green house ?

No I haven't put the tub in the greenhouse, but with the lid off and the greenhouse away from the direct sunlight, that is a good idea!

Why didn't I think of that?

Oh, to answer your question, my edibles just dry out every time. Has to be low humidity.

The low humidity just sucks the moisture from everything

ohh shizzlee why didnt i see that b4 .. there is no hole under your sgfc and its not elevated . the perlite doesnt get the air from the bottom so the result is no evaporation from the water on the perlite that gives the humidity !    :havesomescience:

Maybe it's science, but I'm not putting holes in the bottom. Water will drip out and make a mess

My belief is the water evaporates from the crystals and that creates the humidity.

I get near 90% humidity give or take consistently with the lid on, but with the lid off, nah. Not a believer in the holes in the bottom..

Well that's why you aren't having success. Air gets drawn through the bottom and out the top and sides. Water will not drip out much at all. Just elevate it a few inches and throw a towel under it. It's not just about humidity it's about FAE.

:whathesaid:

citizenx, i know it sounds counter intuitive to put holes at the bottom, but the 4"+ layer of moist perlite acts as a humidifier as air is drawn up thru it.  because perlite does not "absorb" water, it only holds it in its tiny crevices, it evaporates in tiny amounts as air passes up thru it, and since there are probably millions of small crevices in the thick layer of perlite, that adds up to a high level of humidified air that surrounds the fruits in ur chamber.  u can add more perlite if u want, and mist more if the room its in is dry, but it really does work better with holes at the bottom.  if anything, u would have better luck taping the holes up at substrate/fruit level, so any humidified airflow was not immediately sucked back out around the fruits.

:whathesaid:

Is just about learning how convection currents work. Mycelium cakes and our light bulbs heat the air, this hot air rises and get out mostly from the top holes, then the air cools and fall, then it passes trough the bottom holes traveling trough the perlite and absorbing moisture from it, then the air get hotter again and rises and the circle continues... If there is no bottom holes in the chamber most of the inlet air will be blocked.
