Starting Claviceps sp culture from sclerotia
    #20945444 - 12/07/14 11:44 PM (9 years, 5 months ago)

So I get my organic rye berries from local co op and I realized it is loaded with sclerotia. I don't really know for sure if this is purpurea or not, but I think I am going try to get these to germinate on agar as a novelty grow.

I'm thinking about sticking them in moist sand for 2 months in my fridge, rinsing them with sterile DI water and plating them on PDA. If anyone has done this please chime in.

I have plated ones from wild grass species. I didn't rinse with DI water and everything seems to have contammed. No surprise there lol. I still have a bunch of them that I put in a moist towel in the fridge some months ago. Maybe I will retry with those

It's almost 100% Claviveps purpurea.

I don't know any other kind that grows on rye.
