Yes, you found Psilocybe allenii! Wild prints do have a high chance of contaminates because nature, you can always clean them up on agar with a few transfers.

Double 'i' is pronounced like the letter 'E' so Allen'ee, at least in my mind it does.

With just 4 transfers I managed to clean up some dirty Allenii prints using the same agar recipe as for cubes . I plan to take spawn  down to Los Angeles next time I visit because they seem to be a rarity outside the PnW/Bay Area and it would be nice allowing some of my friends down there to find some aggressive Allenii.

What a  great find , especially for an early morning walk. Most of my monster patches have been found in the grass grown woodchip beds

Pronounce it whatever way works for you. I like Michael Kuo's point of view on this:

Quote:

Pronouncing Latin and Greek Names

by Michael Kuo

Oh, who cares?

Pronounce the Latin names of mushrooms any way that works for you, and if someone laughs at you, maybe you can think of some other names, in clear English, to pronounce for them.

Nothing is worse than an English speaking mycologist who corrects people's Latin pronunciation. I mean, it's not like the "correct" pronunciation is anywhere close to the way Latin should be pronounced. For crying out loud, the "correct" pronunciation of Amanita in English rhymes with (I) "am a fighta" ("not a lova").

Those of us who suffered through highschool Latin recall our teachers' explanations about "Church Latin" ("vaynee, veedee, veechee" for veni, vidi, vici) and "real" Latin ("waynee, weedee, weekee"). Now we've got Mispronounced Mycological Latin to throw in the mix?

And how about those antepenultimate syllable people who insist on stressing the second-to-last syllable every time? "Lie-AW-full-um" for Lyophyllum, and so on. When you ask them what they're doing (like, "Excuse me, what are you doing?") they tell you it's a rule. Ask them why they don't, therefore, say "stro-bill-OH-my-seas" for Strobilomyces, and they've got nothing.

Because English is the international language these days (or because Americans and Brits are less open-minded about such things and the rest of the world finds it easier to just cave in), mycologists from countries that don't speak English have adopted the mispronunciations used by English speaking mycologists--though I suspect they secretly wince inside with every term. When not in the presence of English speaking mycologists, however, many pronounce the names in ways that are more reasonable--like, "ah-mah-nee-tah"--especially the mycologists from countries whose languages descend from Latin.

I would have thought Allen-eye too.

the real test is the pretentious pronunciation of psilocybe. Not sil o sibe. Its sil ah so be.

Stunzi - stun z eye

Not that I care.

Then you can sound like a true douche bag and say microscope- my cross co pe

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

A much closer pronounciation for Psilocybe would be si-loe-sib-ee.
i is eye and ii is ee-eye so the species epithet allenii would be allen-ee-eye, but it matters not, what really matters is that we understand what organism is being referred to in conversation.

Microscopy and microscope are not the same thing, nobody pronounces microscope that way. imo reading a foreign or Latin word with English pronunciation doesn't make anyone less of a douchebag (that's doosh-bag, not dowtch-bag).

If you learn how to sound or pronounce the Maori vowels you have a much better chance of pronouncing Latin words closer to how they should be.

The way tahoe has described how to pronounce Psilocybe is fine if you have an American accent:wink:
