Cheapskate Thread
    #20954509 - 12/09/14 07:22 PM (9 years, 5 months ago)

To all the cheap brothers and sisters out there, I'm talking to you.

Nothing better then DIY projects that save you bucks, and I'm looking to learn all your tricks. I'll start off with my own deal of the day, and hopefully you guys can teach me ways you have saved money.

Cheap lighting, good for 8 monotubs:

Light bulb socket - $3.50 Home Depot
Extension cord - $1.50 for the 5 ft, $3.00 for 12 ft at dollarama
6500k florescent buld - $3.00 a piece at dollarama (they are probably cheaper elsewhere these days)
Electrical tape - $2.00 Home depot
Timer - $1.50 dollarama

Chop off the female end of the extension cord and splice on the bulb socket. I did 4 - 5 ft lights and 4 - 8 foot lights.

Total cost for lighting 8 mono-tubs: $49

Idk man I can properly light 15 monos with one t8 fixture that I wired up with a piece of romex.  I got it all from Home Depot. It cost me about the same and looks a little neater.

I stick the bulbs right into jars which I mount to the top of the mono. It adds a little heat. From the past this close light seemed:shrug: to be beneficial . I'm not sure if it is because of the light intensity (I know with dope the florescents have to be very close for it to receive anything that resembles daylight) or because it is from the heat, increasing FAE

What he said.

For $16 you can get a clamp light and a daylight spectrum floodlight bulb from home depot.  Stack your 8 monotubs 4 high side by side and point the floodlight at them.  $33 saved from your fire hazard prone rigged light setup.

If you use fluorescents for bud, you are doing it wrong

I must be missing something, how is it a fire hazard?

Hhaha, I totally disagree. They are by far the best for your first month of VEG as well as keeping mothers. They reduce the internodal spacing, cost next to nothing to run, and you don't need a tent, cool-tube, ballast... etc to run. Of course 3-4 weeks in the tent with MH is needed to bulk them up right before flower, but if you run MH from the start you get much lankier plants with less bud sites.

The sun is pretty cheap. Why not use that for a light source?

Some people don't want windows open where people can look in and see they are growing mushrooms? Some people might work long days and want their 12/12 where the lights are on at night? Some people might not have a window big enough to let in light for their growing area?  Some people might use a 6500k bulb on a timer because it's been proven to work well time and time again?

2nd pic is one plant, 3rd is one of the colas

Electrical tape is good for covering damaged electrical wire sheathing but can be dangerous to splice with.  It comes off easy and the wires can escape and brush up against things.  A cap works much better and you usually would want to put the splice inside a junction box so there's no chance of something ripping it off.

Something like this with the splices enclosed in the box is much safer:

I picked up little bits of info like that working around electricians in the construction business.  You can probably get away with what you did without ever having a problem - my grandpa used to do it all the time and never had a problem - but splices like that are often the cause of house fires.

This. Fires are my worst fear having all the equipment I do. Don't fuck around with fires. A fire caused by faulty wiring just killed 3 kids and their father in my town. Don't fuck around with fires.

That's getting a little out of hand. I'm aware of fire risks and I make damn sure I splice them together even stronger then those screw on nubs. If I was sticking it behind the wall and it wasn't moving then sure, twist caps are fine. But when you are moving the lights a couple times a day I like knowing that I've twisted the wires well and bound them together solid. I don't trust those nubs since in the past I've had them fall off from poor application I suppose

So following proper electrical code is out of hand?

As a journeyman electrician I can't tell you for sure that using electrical tape for joints will cause an arc or shock in your case, but I can tell you for sure that using electrical tape is far less safe than wire nuts.  All joints should be made in a junction box with wire nuts.
