MITES!
    #2093774 - 11/11/03 06:52 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

I just found a horde of mites. I'd taken a casing out of my grow chamber and set it aside to recase w/straw. I took a look at what appeared to be dust was really a bunch of tiny whites moving dots. they were on everything in the area. I even saw a few starting to move into my grow chamber. I took apart all of my humidification stuff and have it soaking in the tub w/bleach. I also sprayed the inside of the chamber. I don't think they made to either of the 2 casings in there. I looked at the contams page and I think they're Tyroglyphid mites (Tyrophagus spp). This makes me think that they came from some straw that was put near by in a pillow case by my room mate. Any advise here is helpful. Can I do more than bleach?

I think it's a wait and see thing right now.
There's not much you can do, i don't know about the use of insecticides though ...

I have battled with mites a few times.

Take no chances. Get rid of anything contaminated. PC it first if you can. Check your jars. Isolate anything that was near any source of mites. I'd move those casings that were close by to a location that is not near the rest of your work. I found that any reservoir allowed them to proliferate. Show no mercy!!

You should really bin that casing, and spray down the surrounding area
with a Malathion based insecticide. Empty your fruiting chamber and spray it down, also anywere else the infected casing has sat.

These things are hard to controll, so you have to work fast
else they might over winter in yout home, giving steady outbreaks
on your casings :[

Thanks for the tips. I think I'll move the casings outside its starting to get a little cool here in NW Fl but at least I got 2 flushes off one and a first flush off the other. With any luck i can get them to fruit in an outdoor bed.
BTW I don't know what Malathion is but will bleach and Lysol work? I would think it should.

Malathion is a commonly avalible pesticide, you can get it
in many garden centers, bleach should do the trick though :]
Unsure abour lysol.

Best thing about Malathion is that if you use it it will hang around
longer than bleach, which becomes usless as it drys. The Malathion
will hang around, meaning that if any mites(they will be all over
the room in little hidding places) that wonder back to your fruiting chamber will still be effected.

oh, and outside is good, as mites only realy reach the numbers you have in indoor conditions, were there is no weather or humiderty
changes to keep them in check.

That stuff sounds bad to me.

I like diacamomo's idea, there are many natural pest repellants. I am currently using a lemon eucalyptus extract to control pests...so far, so good.

Yeah, In the early stages you can try
to use more natural methods, but in the
end imoe nothing will stop mites bar chemicals :[
