A good question (well i think so anyway)
    #2094724 - 11/12/03 12:57 AM (13 years, 26 days ago)

Ok i've been reading a few posts about sterilization, and it just seems odd to me that mushrooms can grow outdoors so easily, with all the contams on the ground/air/etc, yet indoors the preparation must be over done (emphasis on "over") in order to grow successfully. Why is this? I'm thinking maybe because indoors they are limited to one substrate when outdoors there are spores on pretty much everything, and mushrooms find the best contam free spot to grow. Am i right or is there more to it?

no, outdoors is much more sterile then indoors. this has been said several times on this forum: throw a peice of bread in your back yard. then leave one on the floor of your room. see which one molds the fastest.

outdoor is much less contams, and the shrooms are working with about 10,000 times as many spores as we are. more chance for success

From what I understand, though I may be mistaken, the reason for the necessary sterility inside is because outside, there are thousands and thousands of mold spores competing against each other to try to contaminate the mycelium, which makes it much more difficult. Whereas inside, a single mold spore can just go right to town.

Have you ever tried this? I did.

The piece of bread outdoors was transported away by ants.
The piece on the floor dried to a hard piece of bread.

So what conclusions do you make out of this result?

The most logical conclusion is that the ants formed some form of protection from contamination:).

Outdoors, we have ecosystems. Ecosystems can be small, large, or huge. Basically, an ecosystem is a large group of species which work together to create a balance in life. When we transport a species indoors without the other species which it is used to living with, we cause imbalance, causing disease and problems...

thats my take on it.

I think the main reason is that outdoors in nature you don't have highly nutritious, sterilized substrates hanging around....

Hmm, left an entire slice of bread on the floor until it dried out hard, I conclude that you are not married.

the reason is that in nature there is an equilibrium of all of the different spores/molds/bacteria etc. like someone else said, symbiotic relationships.

i agree

two more words. mother nature

where do you think shrooms came from?? those spores in your syringe certainly didn't come from the spore fairy. mushrooms were meant to grow in their natural habitats (thats why its their NATURAL habitat) and they should do fine outside. plus, im pretty sure there will be a lot less maintenance. you dont have to fan them or mist them, or dunk them or anything like that. just gotta keep them wet from my knowledge. if your growing indoors right now, it wouldn't hurt to take your spent casings and take them outside, theres a good outdoor tek in the FAQ.
