They aren't wood lovers they like grass and dung. Just fruit them in a mono with coir/verm/hpoo or you can just case straight grains. Or trays in SGFC.

They like wood enough to fruit on coir. What makes you think they won't perform in sawdust?
(pssst. look at Stevo's signup date. he isn't new to this hobby)

Yeah I just don't see the point I guess? You could say the same for cubes regarding coir. Cubes will grow on wood, and fruit sometimes but not very well. I just don't see why when you would most likely getter better B.E. on hpoo/coir/verm than on sawdust which would take longer. It seems like it would make more sense to grow Gymnopilus if you want to grow something active on sawdust blocks indoors. It might be fun to experiment with but I don't see how it could be better. I'm definitely no expert.

It was a clone from a good sclerotia strain too that I now have side by side with a rgs/wbs mix. I guess I'll ride it out and see what happens and upload pics in a few days. Anyway when I did this outside I noticed the myc was taking a liking to pine wood that I mixed into my grassy substrate, so not a totally unreasonable experiment
Definitely not unreasonable. It should be interesting to see what happens. Keep us updated.

Sorry for the triple post, but I don't like editing sometimes because I am afraid the OP won't see it. How are you planning on fruiting this? I assume since its a sawdust jar you will throw it in a SGFC and fruit straight out the bottle?

Nice! My Gyms were actually pretty decent speed. I am actually going to spawn half a quart to a pasteurized sawdust bag tomorrow and the other half a quart to a jar of dowel spawn. Haven't ever spawned anything to sawdust before, and I used Lipa's wood pellet tek, so well see how it goes. It is MS from a fruit I found while hunting in my local area which is pretty neat. Can't wait to see what happens. I let the spawn go a little long but i didn't produce too many metabolites it looks alright. I haven't messed with sawdust bags or dowels so it should be fun.
How are you planning on fruiting the gyms? Are you throwing the agar in grain or straight into a sawdust jar? Stonesun said he had much better results casing his Gyms so I think I will cut the top of the bag off and case with 1/4 inch of properly pasteurized 50/50 casing in a SGFC. It seems odd to me that a woodlover like Gymnopilus would like a casing, when they grow straight off of logs. But stonesun is a master, so I will follow his lead.

Yeah I don't see why it wouldn't fruit on unsupplemented sawdust. Are there any species that fruit on supplemented but not unsupplemented sawdust? I agree I mostly like to hunt for gyms and cincts and grow edibles. I thinks stacking up a bunch of logs and inoculating them with gym dowel spawn would be pretty cool. Outdoor grows are just more satisfying to me for some reason. I don't really care too much about yields.
I would have supplemented but I thoufht I would try pasteurization since it is so easy. Pour boiling water in a bag and you're done. We'll see how it goes. But yeah let me know how that gym grow goes. Not too many around.
How do you plan on spreading the love outdoors? Inoculating logs with sawdust?

I wonder if the reason it is so thick is because it is searching for a better substrate that it likes so it is reaching out with tomentose growth? I'm just making stuff up.
Interesting though.
