Massachusetts late fall/winter hunting

With the winter and cold weather quickly approaching I'm wondering if it is worth taking a mushroom hike? Do they still continue to grow past the intial frost? It's been bouncing up and down from below freezing to above freezing temps here. For example, it's currently raining at 37f with a predicted high of 49. Tonight it will drop to 20f and then back up to 38f tomorrow. Is there potential for edibles up here once the cold sets in? Actives seem almost impossible when the weather is good, let alone bad so I'm not even including them in the discussion. I started on these mushroom hikes a few months ago just as a reason to head out to the woods and now I'm feeling like I won't be able to head back out until the spring. What's your thoughts? Should I board up the windows and doors and wait until spring?

there are a few species that tolerate the cold a bit.
I don't eat them but i see brickcaps /Hypholoma sublateritium fairly often late. I think i had a reaction when i ate a test batch so i avoid them these days. they tasted great but it felt like my liver swelled up afterwards. no sense in pushing that for some food. Enoki/Flammulina velutipes i've seen pushing through freezing rain. also some Hydnum but not in quantities like early fall, found with snow on the ground.
so, its not a total waste of time, but its nothing like before the frosts.
see what you can find. One thing i like about 'past prime' hiking is you can really see the lay of the land with the leaves down and locate some really nice little gullies and micro-environments that you can check out when the weather *does* get bettter.
the other good thing is : no bugs
good luck and keep lookin'

Hi RuralAnomaly and thanks for the replies, congratulations on getting out there and making those finds. Unfortunately it poured here all day and I chose a nap over a hike. Tomorrow is a whole different story, your finds have motivated me and I will be in the woods by 10pm or so. Good luck on getting an ID and thanks again for sharing.

No matter how many times I listen, it will always be one of the prettiest songs these ears have ever heard. It never gets old. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the reminder. The spot I'm going to today gave me some oyster mushrooms on my last hike. We've had plenty of rain here lately so hopefully it produces again. If I have any luck I'm sure I'll be posting some ID requests, being a newb and all.

The ground here has been freezing and thawing for several weeks now, last time I was down in the woods I crossed by a mushroom in the grass, I neglected to stop and check it out figuring I would catch it on the way back, I did not see it again.
Also many polypores survive into winter, though remain dormant.

Went out today for a few hours in the woods. Mushrooms everywhere, though different mushrooms than I saw in the past few months. Ended up finding quite a few oysters (pics below) as well as some others. New post to come later on this evening hopefully.
