What is a good model for a newer bent shaft weed-whacker? Not one of the industrial ones that straps one, but one that you hold in your hands without any strap. I used Stihls in the past and I loved them. What kind have you used? What is good?

If I use a bent shaft I prefer one with a clutch. where at idle the grass cutter head does not spin till throttle is given generally flex have less clutches. I used a straight shaft commercial echo for years and it never died. I also have used a 80$ homelite for 5 years and its still running strong
Thank you or your question. As far as model goes I use an electric with 150 foot of extension cord at my house. For anyone with weedeatables within 100 feet of plugs in your property I suggest electrics. I don't just use the regular old small diameter line I use ultra durable weedwarrior pulverizer. ..095 when tool its only rated for 060 or something.
If you have to have to get one with an engine get a small 2 stroke and are only doing around the house buy the cheap 80$ one at the store I personally don't buy into homeowner level stihl unless you buy the actual commercial models. They are just as cheap and greedy as the rest and more expensive.. As long as you folllow proper mix instructions of a JASO Rated 2 stroke oil with a stabilizer or add additional stabilizer Star tron suggested. Also store your treated gasoline in a pressure tight container. If you plan to not use whacker for longer than 30 days dump out gas and press primer bulb till carb is empty of gas and try to start to burn up remaining gas. That is the only way you will keep your weed eater or any engine for that matter starting just as easy as day 1.
I have attached winterization instructions that I give to all of my customers.

I am in the process now of restoring 2 old outboards. a 69 merc 40 4hp and a sea king 3. the sea king 3 and buccaneer and a bunch of others are all exclty the same manufactured by gail. If you have a carb that you cant get clean I would be more than happy to dunk it into one of my ultrasonic cleaners if you pay shipping both ways no charge. Anyway thanks for sharing and keep me updated on some videos or finished projects!!!

i just finished rebuilding a bmw big six engine,m30b35 ready for standalone,900cc injectors and T78 with a/r 0.96 on exhaust part
brought a 85hp johnson outboard back to life autunm 2014,got it cheap beacause the seller tought it neded totally rebuilding, not many hours on it so i bought it when he said no headgaskets where ever replaced on it. did the carbs totally, and two new headgaskets, and also new gas-hoses and hooked them the right way, instead of filling the crankcase with fuel i love mechanics and engines.

If engine runs its a lot easier. But keep in mind I'm not a boat mechanic I have VERY little experience with diesel but I do have some common sense read on.
Start with a manual Get the manual and read it end to end 2x and follow the guidelines and procures
Most importantly, Change the Oil, Radiator flush insect/change cooling hoses thermostat. Battery inspection/change if nec. Waterpump impeller magic water teleportation system Whatever that beeotch uses MAKE SURE ITS RIGHT. Fuel filter learn a lot and read a lot.
The Vast Majority of All Diesel Damage is Due to Lack of Cooling System Maintenance
We don't know the exact percentage of engine failures that result from lack of cooling system maintenance, but it is surely at least 50%. You need to understand this: Diesel engines operate under a piston compression of around 350 to 550 psi. That is three to four times the amount of a gas engine. This high compression puts great strain on the engine and can build up heat very rapidly (like within 60 seconds) if there is a failure in the cooling system. Diesel cooling systems are vastly more critical than gas engine cooling systems. Gas engines can suffer from numerous moderate overheats without causing catastrophic damage. THIS IS NOT TRUE OF DIESELS.

its cools like a charm, its not necessery to replace every season.this did not have a tell-tail from factory,i borred a hole and mounted a coupler in the upper cylinder (v4),that eliminated the problem of air pockets in this upper cyl. overall it cools great.

On your Mower the wire crimp is a stop. so it does not pull the handle all the way in. There should be a metal loop string passes though keeping the pull start handle close to the push handle like this
Also Bike peg is a very good suggestion
http://www.instructables.com/id/Weed-Eater-motor-BikeFriction-Drive/ See this instructable
Please post some close up pics ou may just need a primer but carb is so cheap $17 its allmost not worth the headache, Also you need to learn how to store a mower and you will never have a problem.

Storage! If you read this and follow this on anything mechanical you own, you will save adleast $10,000. over your lifetime
Its easy to winterize your tractor, lawn mower, or anything that uses a small gasoline engine. The procedure laid out below assumes that you will not be using the equipment again for some time (longer than 60 days). Clean Up Lets start with a good clean-up. If you have a pressure washer feel free to use it, use caution though. Take care that you do not force dirt and water into bearings that were not designed to withstand that kind of pressure. The high pressure spray will also wash away any lubricant that it hits. Inspect and Replace The next step is to inspect the deck, deck belts, hangers, and blades. If anything is broken or worn, plan to replace it during the winters down time so you are ready come spring. If you have the deck off or tractor jacked up, remove the blades and have them sharpened. You can get the blades off by blocking the blade with a piece of wood and unscrewing the blade bolt or nut. Wearing gloves is a good idea especially when re-installing the sharpened or new blades. Its a good idea to replace deck belts that have any signs of wear. That way your guaranteed to get through the next cutting season without any downtime for a belt that you knew would not make it. If you have removed the deck, now is a good time to lube the tractor. Use your owners manual. Most owners manuals will point out where, and what kind of lube should be applied. Oil Change Lets stop here an change the oil. Check the oil level, if its ok, start the engine and allow it to warm up a little. This will make the oil easier to change and will also stir up the dirt that might in the oil pan so that it will come out with the used oil. Stop the engine and drain the oil. Don't forget to replace the drain plug before refilling. If your engine is equipped with a oil filter, change it now. Refill with the proper oil for your engine. Now for the Engine Gasoline is very dangerous. Work only in a well ventilated area, away from any source of heat or open flame! Fuel Filter Start by changing the fuel filter. Clamp off the fuel line between the tank and the fuel filter. Remove by loosening the clamps that hold the filter and pulling it out of the hose. Be careful to catch any gasoline that may spill. Always replace the hose that is between the filter and the carburetor. Notice that the filter usually has barbs on it. These barbs may tear the inside of the hose when the filter is removed. A piece of hose could enter the carb and cause real problems. Remove the air filter and precleaner. Clean or replace them as necessary. Reinstall the Air Cleaner. Gasoline Preperation Next, AND MOST IMPORTANT lets prepare the gasoline itself. Gasoline should be stored no more than 30 days without treatment and should be stored in an environmentally friendly AIRTIGHT container. Start the engine and let it run out of stabilized gas (coating the tank and inner carb). You don't want to leave any gas remaining in the tank or the carburetor or it will form gummy deposits and varnish that will clog the carburetor jets EVEN IF IT HAS STABILIZER IN IT! Spark Plug We are almost done. Park the power equipment where it's going to sleep away for the winter, after the next two steps we don't want to start it again. Now, remove the spark plug. Put a teaspoon of engine oil into the spark plug hole. Replace the spark plug with a new one(s). Crank the engine over a few times to spread the oil inside the cylinder(s). And if its possible on your engine turn the engine over by hand until you feel the compression stroke. This closes the valves and prevents moisture from getting into the engine. Finalizing Most people change their batteries every year. When in fact, a mower battery should last over 5 years! You should run a trickle charger on your lawn mower 24/7 that has a safety shut off and will only kick on then the voltage requires it. Remove the battery from the unit and store it in a warm spot. Buy a trickle charger $9.99 from harbor freight and use the charger on it through this will: Prevent battery self-discharge while maintaining the life of 12 volt rechargeable batteries Floating circuit maintains a full charge without overcharging Simple to use - just connect and plug in Automatic safety shutoff.
Now that you have finished these steps your power equipment should be ready to be safely stored for the winter. Don't forget to replace any damaged or worn out parts during the winter so at the beginning of spring you are ready to get moving again.
