Rituals? Reasoning? Your thoughts!

I am asking all of those who use psychedelics, such as psilocybin, eargot, ayahuasca, etc. two questions and would love to have a discussion based upon them:
1. Do you utilize natural, plant-based psychedelics for spiritual purposes and/or personal growth/exploration? If so, in what capacity? If not, why do you consume them?
2. Do you have a ritual leading up to when you consume them? i.e.: fasting, exercising before, total darkness, picking music for the night, etc.
Intent is a very important thing, but I feel that the mentality and approach you take going into the experience is near equally important. Thoughts?

I gotta agree with Bummer. When your trippin' in a mess, you always feel stressed. Even after I finish tripping, my brain reminds me more to put my dish into the dishwasher, bring my cup downstairs, turn the light off when I leave the room, put the cereal box away. All that shit.

1. Yes, to develop myself. 2. Depends of the substance.
On mushrooms I make sure I am as relaxed as possible and meditate as well as take a bath before tripping. Then a special playlist that has only music that never has any type of music that might set me off into weird emotions. Total darkness and eyes closed is best on mushrooms. On DMT I make sure I am relaxed and then play same music when I start smoking the substance. Always keep my eyes open and the room with dim lights.
On all substances I make sure the place is as clean as possible.

I notice cleanliness is a big part.
Exercising (hiking, yogic poses, meditation), cleaning up, showering, a proper vitamin rich breakfast, lots of water and an empty stomach are my own personal rituals. I tend to take the cubensis alone as well (most preferred) and have a very similar ritual to that of the ayahuasca traditions. Playing music such as the Amazonian icaros is beautiful

1. Yes, I see the Earth as a mother who gives us her tools for us to use, so I use the Earth's technology as much as I can, to progress myself and humanity forward. It's a lifestyle.
2. I honor the ones who came before me and the Earth for what she has given us as gifts. Once again, this is a lifestyle.

I go to the shops and get supplies like some nice chocolate and stuff, clean the place up as much as possible, set candles and lighting, have a really good shower, then i make tea, re-cleaning all of the things i'm going to use as thoroughly as possible beforehand , while it's brewing i make a playlist to continue after whatever i'm listening to during the other preparation, always being mindful of the experience I'm about to have and generally being thankful for the opportunity, i take my time and feel like everything i do to prepare contributes its own part towards having a positive experience

I think a ritual is good for a framework - not if done superstitiously. good for physical real reasons that you understand, and good for symbolic reasons that appeal to you.
A ritual routine is like a song, in which a melody is repeated and recognized with delight, or poignancy.
More than that, not interested.

Yes to both. Ritual is IME a vital component of such usage. For mushrooms at least, there appears to be a strong spiritual interface of some sort, and that interface basically looks at you to see if you "qualify" to proceed with what you want to do. If you don't pass the test you're immediately kicked out of there and your access is revoked.
In 1. you ask "in what capacity." I've performed healing tasks and spiritual interventions. In both cases I've gotten "real world" feedback from affected parties that indicated the efficacy of what I was trying to accomplish.
But mostly I consume them for research into the physics of what happens while tripping at high doses. Or for fun. Or both.
For 2. I will do a lot of house cleaning for any extended psychedelic usage, but I ALWAYS recite a short incantation before consumption, and again during the trip if I start drifting from my intention. I don't do them at night, only during the day.

I dont think that the spirit, or energy of the mushrooms decides whether or not you're worthy to experience what they have to offer. I believe the mission of the mushrooms is to break us from whatever is blinding us from seeing truth, and to guide us ultimately to a better path for mother nature.

It's just a rough description in words of experience, not a prescription. YMMV.
Try to demand they demonstrate their power sometimes and see what happens. Dennis McKenna described what happened to Terrence that way in the podcast that came out last week. I doubt what anybody "believes" the mushroom's mission is is likely wrong - but you can always just ask them.
An awful lot of people who approach them casually get handed their ass on a plate. Not guiding there.

I hear that. I believe ritual can be important, but the intent of the practises are critical, like with any action in life.
I have read some studies showing that some of the shamanic traditions and Aboriginal American traditions that utilize sage smudging actually do have a positive 'physical' effect in that it turns negative ions to positive ions. I would personally like to try that in addition to cleanliness for my ceremonies.
Anybody else? I believe it is enjoyable to share in these types of conversations.

I think that the term "ions" is used poetically in that story and in such cases, as people don't know the difference between electrical charge and attitude, it can be helpful or at least playful.
the smell of burning sage is very uplifting is also a simple truth, and to do it in a ritual is a lovely thing.

I always try to exercise prior to dosing and I usually end up doing some form of exercise while tripping. Rare if I dont catch myself doing something to get my body going by the end (hike, bike, skate, etc.)...it just feels so damn goodo get off your ass and benefit your body/mind . Best way to pretty much guarantee a positive time...puts your mind in a positive spot.

Sadhana, meditation on the infinite supreme consciousness, is where my life revolves

fantastic,
I feel the same way. The idea that "I am enough" is really what gets me through to.. well.. me!
I meditate regularly, so i can't say i've ever done meditation in order to prepare for a trip specifically, but i always make sure to before I trip anyways. Also, i've tried to meditate on come-ups, but i'm usually too antsy or excited.
I want to put some of these rituals into use though, for my next experiment: burning sage, putting together a playlist, having a devotional meditation in gratitude for being able to use a powerful spiritual tool
