Is the US a Christian nation?
    #2093707 - 11/11/03 08:33 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I have a confession to make: I'm only creating this thread because I have an essay due on this topic tomorrow.

That said, what do you think? Does the fact that most of the founding fathers were Christian make this a Christian nation? Or is it a secular nation, since it forbids the establishment of a state religion?

Does the fact that most of the founding fathers were Christian...

research that a little bit. you'll find some interesting facts...

Or is it a secular nation, since it forbids the establishment of a state religion?

yes.

unfortunately democracy has allowed this to be trampled on by the christian majority in the country, and many of our laws are based on nothing more than christian morality.

you could argue it either way... technically, we're not... but i think that christianity has been allowed to so heavily influence public policy that one could say we are.

Many say it is not Christian enough.

However, to answer your question, the majority of Americans profess to believe in God, and the majority of those consider themselves to be Christian.

The majority of the Founding Fathers were Christian, though they were careful to ensure there would be no official state religion of the new country they were creating, nor prohibition of religions other than their own.

As much as Bush and Ashcroft would like to declare Christian law on all of the United States, I think the U.S. is far from being a 'religious nation'. Countries like Saudi Arabia are evidently religious nations.

George Washington: "The United States is in no sense founded
upon Christian Doctrine"

Thomas Jefferson: "It does me no injury for my neighbor to say
there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor
breaks my leg."

Thomas Paine: I do not believe in the creed professed by the
Jewish Church, by the Roman Church, by the Greek Church, by
the Turkish Church, by the Protestant Church, nor by any Church
that I know of. My own mind is my own Church.

Roger Williams: God requireth not a uniformity of religion.

Thomas Jefferson: The day will come when the mystical
generation of Jesus, by the Supreme Being as his Father, in the
womb of a virgin, will be classified with the fable of the generation
of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter. But we may hope that the
dawn of reason and the freedom of thought in these United
States will do away with this artificial scaffolding, and restore to
us the primitive and genuine doctrines of this most venerated
Reformer of human errors.

James Madison: During almost fifteen centuries the legal establishment
known as Christianity has been on trial, and what have been the fruits,
more or less, in all places? These are the fruits: pride, indolence,
ignorance, and arrogance in the clergy. Ignorance, arrogance, and
servility in the laity, and in both clergy and laity, superstition,
bigotry, and persecution.

Thomas Jefferson: I do not find in orthodox Christianity one redeeming
feature.

John Adams: The divinity of Jesus is made a convenient cover for
absurdity. Nowhere in the Gospels do we find a precept for Creeds,
Confessions, Oaths, Doctrines, and whole carloads of other foolish
trumpery that we find in Christianity.

Thomas Paine: Of all the tyrannies that affect mankind, tyranny in
religion is the worst.

Abraham Lincoln: The Bible is not my Book and Christianity is not my
religion. I could never give assent to the long complicated statements of
Christian dogma.

Benjamin Franklin: As to Jesus of Nazareth, I think the system of Morals
and his Religion, as he left them to us, the best the World ever saw or
is likely to see; but I apprehend it has received various corrupting
Changes, and I have, with the most of the present Dissenters in England,
some doubts to his divinity.

I think America is a secular nation whose government is often run by Christians.

YES

We are governed by Christian ethics. The illegality of prostitution is a great example of that. There is absolutely no reason in the world prostitution shouldn't be legal. But the bible said that it's wrong, so it's illegal.

In it's current incarnation, headed by the Reich Wing, yes.

It is a "Christian" Nation.

By the common meaning of that word.

There are about 70 million religious christians in the US. That's about 1/4 of the population. There are lots of jews, muslims, and people who don't take any religion seriously.

However, Christmass and Easter (I'm probably missing a couple) are national holidays. Schools and businesses close even for people who are not christian. And most people in the US do celeebrate those holidays.

So the question you have asked does not have a right or wrong anser. But I will mention that it is funny how pres Bush says "Let god bless america" or something like that after all his speaches. Although the US government is not based upon religion, I think that many leaders of the country are influenced by their religious upbringing. For example, pres Bush wants to take steps to make abortions illegal. Same thing with gay marriages. It is interesting how much the bible is turned to in order to answer moral and ethical questions for a coutry that is supposedly not based upon religion.

I don't think that anyone would claim that hte US is not "based" upon religion. How many of our founding documents allude to "god"? Do you feel that Bush saying "Let god bless America" is wrong?

  Good quotes, afoaf.  Contrary to what televangelists would have you believe, although many of the founders were born into and raised in Christianity ,quite of few of them considered themselves deists.

When you compare the US to other first world countries, it's probably the most religious out of all of them.

When you compare it to all the countries in the world, it's fairly non-religious.

The US does not officially recognize any given religion; but nor does it officially recognize the existence of the financial oligarchy(*) either. Religiouswise, the reality is what is commonly known called "Calvinism", which asserts the growth of social and economic inequality as the will of God. The actual meaning of Calvinism, however, is far more complex.

(*) Other examples of financial oligarchy include the Soviet Central Comittee and the Iranian Guardian Council.
