Can I just use rich soil for my casings???? I also have easy access to horse compost but it has some rther large wood chips i it would that be a problem>? And could I nuke the compost for sterilization

Well, I think you need to do some reading.

You're talking about a substrate here. A casing is a [substrate] with a layer of non-nutritional material like vermeculite or coco-coir.

The substrate is the nutrient rich base of the casing.

Bulk substrate consists of using dung/manure, straw, compost or a mixture of the three. This bulk substrate needs to be pasturised, not nuked to sterilization!

If you are using BRF cakes, you can just crumble them and use a casing layer to acheive satisfactory results.

If you are using grain spawn, then you will want to use a bulk substrate like the ones listed above.

No, rich soil will not work as a bulk substrate.
