Wait what? Maybe it's because I've been using lab grade stuff as opposed to the asian food flakes? never had this smell though lol.

So you'd rather risk contaminating once clean cultures that took 45mins to an hour to prep than break out a SAB, spray and wait 10 minutes? The mini rounds are clear(ish), at least enough to spot contams, especially with a bright flash light.
Well, not sure as I haven't had contams yet. My kitchen is the cleanest place in my entire house and I think I can get away with it. I'll definitely respect contams once they begin to interfere in my affairs. Until then

It's seaweed extract, why wouldn't it smell like ocean stink?!

I'm pretty sure it's refined, not straight dehydrated seaweed like the organic gardening amendments. RR says there's as much fecal matter and contam spores floating around your kitchen as there is in your bathroom (hell he may have said more than your bathroom). Regardless, unless youre in a lab type environment, open air and agar typically don't go together.

The kitchen is generally the most contam filled part of any house.

I use a spare bedroom that the cat, and food, aren't allowed in to do my work.

I made a room out of painters plastic for my sterile work.
My contam rate has gone down considerably since I started using it.

I almost want to throw a big plastic sheet over the entire carpet so that I don't have to worry about that. The walls are pretty freshly painted so those don't concern me.

It's more important to keep out drafts than anything. Still air is the key.

Ah, well, only draft is from me opening the door to get in there, and getting my tyvek suit and all that shit on in there before working. Since I moved to a bigger SAB my contam rate has been pretty damn acceptable. Only have one agar plate with a contam and it's one that I had to shake the fucking tool to get the mycelium off.

The dirtiest surface is the bottom of a woman's purse. someone took swabs from the bottoms of several purses and found everything from ecoli to herpes. So make sure your woman keeps that thing away from your work area.

Good call, I don't open them except to transfer. Even then I still get contams occasionally, definitely don't get overconfident.

Oh geez, I use the old looking leather from used womens purses to make things like steampunk goggles. Now I'm slightly afraid of my creations. I don't want to catch the herp-a-derp from a DIY hobby lmao.

It makes sense when you think of all the places women set their purses down. Oh shit I just realized what thread this was. I'm so used to talking OTD bullshit in the journals. I can't stay on topic in cult anymore.

Oh my bad, I'm just as guilty of going off topic. Back on topic, since the smell of agar has recently been discussed, I don't get much of a smell off of properly prepared agar. The first time I made it though I used 2-3 times to much dehydrated MEA (the kind from out-grow) and when I threw it in the trash the whole room smelled like the ocean. It wasn't really pleasant but it wasn't bad either.
