Here's my sitch:
On Monday December 15th I will rise early to begin a 2300 mile journey to California.
My goal,
Arrive at Mt. Shasta before the winter solstice (Dec. 22nd) and set up camp to trip.
I've always wanted to visit Mt. Shasta, and I have a weird feeling I need to be there on the 22nd.
So this thread to ask for winter camping advice (mainly gear) and to throw any other general tips out there.
I have about 800$ to play with (probably more, I'll update ASAP) so my question are as follows:
- What gear should I not cheap out on
- What gear can I cheap out on
- Can any tent be a snow tent
- What kind of clothing layers should I buy
- Could you forward or supply me with a basic winter camping checklist
Thank you to anyone who throws their this way!
Your opinions and advice are appreciated to the fullest, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Two down sleeping bags, one inside the other. Down camp booties they are like a down jacket for your feet. A piece of foam to break contact between you and the ground. Put socks over your water bottle and sleep with it to keep it from freezing. Also bring sweets to snack on if you wake up cold. Bring an empty bottle in your sleeping bag so you don't have to get out of bed in the middle of the night.
As for tents I'd look into an A Frame style like a Eureka timberline. If it snows on you they can slough off the snow a bit better then a dome style.

Quick google search yields some good checklists, this was the first one.

If it were me I would just use all the same camping gear I already use, but just pack more layers to keep warm. Make sure you have some sort of hatchet or machete to cut wood for a fire (assuming you're cheap like me and don't like spending a ton on fire wood) gloves for those, makes carrying the wood easier as well as less shock to your hands.
