Why science is stupid
    #2091492 - 11/11/03 04:06 AM (20 years, 5 months ago)

So in school, your teacher teaches you; his pupil, how your eyes work. Your eye is open, visual stimulus comes in via light, is relayed to the brain, and thus you see what is in front of you.

nope, thats not how we work.

When you look at something, you dont see it for what it really it is, all you are ever capable of seeing is yourself reflected in the external. all around us is meaningless matter, so when we see something, we are able to apply meaning/substance/form to it because of our experience/memory.

you see a carrot, you have a prior memory involving a carrot, thus you see your memory and assign it the object youve been taught is a carrot. If you had a prior experience that was positive, and one in which you learned that a human can EAT a carrot, you would assign that meaning.

but

if your girlfriend was murdered with a carrot in broad daylight, you would relate that memory to the object formaly known as "carrot" and it wouldnt seem nutritious, it would seem deadly.

thusly - all you can ever see is yourself.

You make an excellent case. Why don't you go public with your ideas, and that will be the end of this stupid science thingie once and for all.

Eyes work like you describe in your 2nd sentence, regardless of what meaning a human brain associates with the information that comes to it from the eyes.

Light would still enter the eye and strike the retina, and become translated into visual information- carrot, instrument of brutal murder, or snowman nose. I don't understand how you are even making this mistake.

You may be confusing science and philosophy here.

And even if you aren't, you have missed THE NUMBER ONE POINT OF SCIENCE: to continually advance your knowledge with the latest information.

Saying that science is wrong about something does not mean that science is "stupid". Probably 90-95% of what we know now will turn out to be wrong in some way. That doesn't mean science is wrong. Science is doing its job.

science is only wrong when it tries to make general rules and laws.

that doesnt sound like a very good argument against science.

but how much the brain messes with what we see is an interesting subject. I agree to certain extent with this house of mirrors theory, but you gotta admit that there must be a large amount of accuracy involved in seeing. You can say we only see ouselves in everything to the extent that everything's assigned an emotional tagg of sorts. An emotional tagg relative to the self and it's goals.

Like your example with the murdering carrot. With such an emotional association attached to the carrot, it's nutritional value would be far from your mind when looking at it. but there must still be plenty of 'dry' perceptions going on somewhere, just so you can recognize the object.

Mixomatosis, what you said has nothing to do with science.

> Probably 90-95% of what we know now will turn out to be wrong in some way.

You mean physics laws etc? Or research to "the effects of microwaves to the brain of mice" etc?

> science is only wrong when it tries to make general rules and laws.
Why? Science does that....

no need to say sorry. I just said that it has nothing to do with science... that's all.

yeah, it really wasnt an argument against science, it was more an argument against a particular thing you were taught. Completely healthy, but not an argument against science.

How we related things we see to visual memories is actually a study of psycholgy, which is in fact a science. You're just mixing up two different aspects of the science of the eye... first the phyisical aspect then the mechanical aspect then you try and contrast your agrument againt the psychological aspect.
