Thinking of going Apple.
    #2092219 - 11/11/03 11:46 AM (20 years, 4 months ago)

Any Apple users out there? I am thinking about buying a new Apple computer for the first time. I am so sick of Microsoft and Windows in particular. Anyone want to give me any reasons why I should or shouldn't do this? Thanks.

I'm also thinking about switching, Im pretty sure I wont have the cash though =\ so instead I'll have to spend the money building a new system and continuing to run linux.

I was thinking of one of these to keep the costs lower:
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/We...C/2.0.7.1.0.5.3
but would much rather have the 17" 16:9 display version

I also wouldnt mind one of those dual g5's with one of those ultra sexy 16:9 displays :dro0l:

If you dont want to spend the money look at a recent distributions of linux, you can pick up a nice box set from best buy with detailed printed instructiions, or download the cds from the internet and print out the instructions yourself.

Apples annoy me the same way aol does. They try to make it so user friendly it just pisses me off. Also i found it really easy to change the name of files. If you are going through system files and easily one can be renamed causing the computer to be unable to start. Also i think the reputation of apples not crashing much is bs. The ones ive seen or friends had would lock up like bitches.

Apple computers are ok in general. The thing that makes them suck tho is that amount of software made for windows machines blows away mac.

Have you used the newer Unix based operating system?  I believe that the OSX is based on FreeBSD Unix which is a lot more stable than Windblows (in my experience).

Oh trust me, I agree...I think Apples are much more stable and better built computers over all. My comment was more or less a private jab at Scratcher...

I would agree on the stability if you are running OS X.2 or X.3, but the apple hardware isn't really any more stable. The old slot loading and tray loading iMacs have numerous problems with the analog/video board. The new eMacs have a lot of problems with the analog display assembly. The powerbook G4's have issues with the inverter for the display, and the LVDS cables are weak. The G3 and G4 towers are both fairly good. Both the eMac and the flat panel iMac have a lot of issues with the superdrive, as does the G4 powerbook. The powerbook line seems fairly solid as well. I haven't worked on a G5 yet, so I cannot comment on that one.

Here's two simple reasons that even the stupidest computer novice might understand.

1. The G5, "The World's Most Powerful Home Computer" comes with a mouse with one button on it. One.

2. There is no button to eject the CD-ROM on most macs except for the eject button on the keyboard...which means you can only eject a CD when you are booted into the OS and there are enough free system resources to quickly recognize keyboard input.

And that's not even getting into the moronic OS itself.

Macintosh. Crash Different.

Incorrect. Turn on the computer. After the apple tone, hit the option key and hold it. Wait until the boot device list page loads, then hit apple-E. Out will eject the CD. No OS needed.

> And that's not even getting into the moronic OS itself.

Lets not go there... If you don't know how to eject a cd without getting into the OS, then you don't know enough to argue one way or the other about the OS. Both windows and OS-X have problems, but at least OS-X is built on top of a platform that has over 30 years of development put into it (unix).

Not really an argument either, if you can get everything done with one button then why have 7 on the mouse. Personally the only extra button on a mouse I'm disappointed not seeing is a wheel. Then again, you can use a wide range of other mice...

It is getting closer, but still has a long way to go.  The panther (10.3) release is really nice.  They still need an easy way to uninstall applications... and an application base would help as well.

Saying mac has better components is BS, if you build your own computer you can choose from a ton of quality parts, I guess I am just stuck on windows because I am a hardcore gamer and there is like 0 games for mac, lol....I have the most POWERFUL computer, but wait...I can't play games on it! I guess it is better for photoshop/premier type progz but I use them on my built up PC and the work FINE. just my 2 cents, peace.

i do alot of graphics and whatnot, so i prefer macs cause they never done me wrong while working on a huge filesize within various programs. now on windows i get from time to time sudden crashing of applications while in the middle of working, which really sucks ass when it happens. all in all i just love macs and always have since using my friends about 10 yrs ago. problem is they cost a hell of alot.

Know what would be really awesome? A button on the cd-rom you could push to make it eject.  No software interface invovled! :ooo:

My point was that what kind of computer doesn't even have a button on the tower to open the cd-rom?  I don't know a whole lot about macs.  The only reason i ever use them is when I have to for work (ITS at school) which is usually a complete pain in the ass.  Of course Mac and Windows both have problems, but in my experience Macs are just worse.  I don't like the way programs install and uninstall.  I don't like the overly minimalist hardware, the performance sucks relative to a PC and everything just seems stripped down and weirdly chaotic and generally fucked.

I'd rather deal with Windows' registry anyday. I guess mainly because DOS was what I was shown back in the day so i've always just used and  been comfortable with all the GUIs MS has thrown on top of it over the years.  I've never liked Macs, going back to the days of the classic which was maybe the first computer i ever used.

I would say they are about the same.

> I don't like the way programs install and uninstall.

I have issues with this as well... at least uninstall... the installer is fine.

> I don't like the overly minimalist hardware, the performance sucks relative to a PC and everything just seems stripped down and weirdly chaotic and generally fucked.

The high end mac hardware (G4/G5) and xservers will blow the doors off of any intel based platform for the price.  With OS-X, the mac is more on the level of a sun or sgi workstation... windows/intel cannot get close to this.  If you are playing games, go windows... if you are doing graphics work, go mac...

Personally, I am a huge sun microsystems fan.  Screw intel, microsoft, and apple... Solaris and Ultrasparcs are the way to go.
