ball brand plastic canning jar storage lids... experience?
    #2038893 -

I just picked up some of these and was wondering what kind of experience you guys have had with them. They say on the box that they are not for food processing, but I hear that they can with stand the pressure and heat from pressure cookers just fine... and opinions or comments would be appreciated.

They should be fine, just run a test batch before you load your jars in.

They are awesome. If you do grain, or whatever, you can drill a single hole on the top, and fill it with polyfill. No more rusty lids, they withstand the temperatures of a pressure cooker and are easy to clean.

I recommend buying these before buying whole new jars or the normal metal "dome lids".

How long untill the lids start to rust, also, what are your methods of inoculation? i punch an extra whole in the lid near the edge and inoculate through that. (talking about grain, of course)

Well, the regular METAL dome lids that come with the ball jars will start to rust after the first or second time around.

With the plastic lids, (and metal too), I drill or punch a 1/4" hole directly in the center of the lid. I fill tightly with a big ball of polyfill, and then innoculate through the side of the polyfill.

I got them from http://www.mycosupply.com/. I purchased a lot of other goodies from them too. I would definately recommend them since they have good prices and they aren't all hyped up like a lot of the other vendors. I don't know what's up with the people selling things (Including spores) in the mushroom cultivation scene. Some of these people (Especially spore vendors) charge such high prices, you'd swear you'd get a blowjob along with the spore syringe at those prices. Anyway... I'm getting way off of the subject... I drilled a hole in the lids so that I could do a polyfil lid (My preferred method). The rust on my previous lids were getting pretty bad. It was to where my hands would turn brown when I would tighten the lids.
