Azures in Astoria...Still to dry?
    #2090824 - 11/10/03 11:52 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I did not have much luck on the coast this weekend. I checked out a few places and came back with about 40 wet grams of azures. They were all small and the places that i looked were definatly hit already. I wish people didn't thrash the environment so bad when they pick. This patch that i usually check out was all torn apart. I was pretty disgusted that people are so inconsiderate of the land. I wouldn't be suprised if they stopped growing there because all the trampled ground and torn up folage. Any ways, I took a tip from someone to check out the Fort Camby and Fort Stevens area. They are both so big, and I really didn't have a clue what areas of the parks to look in. I found none at the Forts. I saw the no picking mushrooms sign at fort canby, thought that was a good sign of finding some. I think it is still to dry.

Thanks for the update. Are you going to the Astoria Gathering in late November? (see the Gathering Forum thread) Several of us will be in attendance. It should be a good time!

I hope you realize that you contribute your own share to the same problem you speak of. You may be more considerate than some pickers out there, but you still contribute to the issue, it's simply unavoidable. I am in the same situation. I trample the trails too. People have become privy to some of the patches I used to hunt at the same locations you speak of. I remember the patches two years ago and then what I saw last year...it was sad.

Did you hunt any other locations besides the ones that were told to you? Did you pick the small immature specimens that someone else was considerate enough to leave in order that they might mature?

It's is very easy to cast the blame. I intend this post to be thought provoking.

Joshua

I understand that everyone is going to contribute to the problem as long as they pick. Yes I am more considerate than others. I do not pull out or cut the folage back. I look under and around and try and put stuff back the way I found it. I am not an angel by any means but, I do try to leave the area the same it was when i got there. And I don't pick immature specimens! The other locations that I searched were the forts, and a few places that I was just taking a wild guess on, based on the enviroment.

Pick em dont Pull em [Re: fidget]

Seems a bumper crop ((compared to last year)) brought out the teenagers from mars ... lots of trample and pulling instead of picking
....Even tho' Azures are plentiful on the beach as well as a few true Cyans .... And maybe its just me but the boards seem all quiet and paranoid this season

There will always be mushrooms so stop worring too much about trampling. Just be as carefull as you can and don't worry about it beyond that. Plants and fungi are strong they can take a licking and keep on ticking.  :smile2:
