blending up birdseed

I was wondering if instead of breaking up colonized birdseed by hand in preparation to spawn dung, could you use a blender to break it up, thus creating more innoculation points??

you could try it. i'd be worried that it could actually be a contamination issue... but i may be completely wrong about that.

Well, i figure as long as I wash the blender really well w. bleach or something, it would be ok. I mean, if you can break apart the birdseed w. your hands in an open air kitchen, how much worse could it be to break it apart using a sterilzed blender??

here's what i'm thinking...

each grain is a little case enclosing a nutrient mush. now... the outsides of the grains are fully colonized with mycelium when you birth the jars, but the insides of the grains might not be fully penetrated (... just conjecture). if you run it through the blender, you rupture the seed cases, exposing all of the nutrient rich mush. i think it's a possible vector for contamination. also, you don't want to break up mycelium strands too fine. i think that inoculation points the size of millet grains are just right.

*my 2 cents on the matter.

I would think it would disturb the mycelium. If you dont get a contam in the process, I think it would take longer for the mycelium to recover and continue STRONG growth. Also, some peeps think doing the opposite, leaving them whole, is a better way to case. Blending seems like something to stay away from, but i could be totally wrong. Maybe some else has tried this? Or maybe you could to a little experiment and let us know what happens.

i believe that the size of millet is perfect for spawn material. just break it up and use it.
