Cities or Suburbs... Which will dominate the future?

Are cities or suburbs going to become the dominant geographic regions of the future? some geographers claim that suburbs are dying, and the population is moving back to urban centers. but other theorists say the opposite, that sprawl will continue. which do you think will happen, and why?

I haven't read up on the subject but I assume if the population is always increasing then cities seem like the most viable option to house a large number of people.

Cities will always prevail...they have transit, jobs, and are incredibly diverse in their race and demographic.
Furthermore the suburbs live off the city...if the city wasn't there the suburbs simply wouldn't exist.

I agree that cities generally have the jobs. However my town is almost entirely comprised of suburbs with a tiny downtown. It is half a million people but doesn't feel it because it is so spread out and the population density is low. I hope that my town focuses more on increasing density in the downtown core and finding ways to stop the urban sprawl.

People will scratch out an existence wherever they are...of that I am certain. However, the whole travelling thing is played out. In Chicago people commute from all over the tri-state area...rush hour is insane here.
Again the only reason it is like this is because there are so many jobs in the city. Chicago is mainly vertical space these days...high-rises and whatnot. Holds lots of people for living quarters, or work stations.
So you want to see taller buildings in your town/ city?

I do not only in my opinion are high rises more aesthetically pleasing they are more environmentally friendly as well. Plus higher population densities in smaller areas gives you more options for transport, food, culture.

Its funny though...I've noticed my parents grew up in small towns and moved to the city with my sisters and I. Now we all live in the suburbs/ city.
My wife's parents grew up in the city, and now they live in small towns. Geting off track, but I thought that was interesting.
That being said, maybe you need to make a move somewhere. If you feel that the area you are in now isn't suitable any longer take off. If you've got nothing keeping you there that is...

Only problem would be having enough cash to live comfortably in a larger area and landing a decent job.

I think the problem is, all of those high density cities have a reason for being so dense- usually they grew around a port, or meeting of rivers.
If your city is, say, at the center of a large valley, theres nothing for the city edges to rub up against and cause the need for more density. And, we have such an established car culture, there's no real need for any central business area. It will always be cheaper and easier for developers to tear out an old orchard on the outskirts and throw down a new housing tract, rather than rebuild what we've got. It is a real shame to see crumbling infrastructure and architecture in what was once the city center, long forgotten.
My local downtown is slowly being revitalized, but only because of a strong push by the city. However, their strategy seems to be to tear down the old pretty buildings, and replace them with apartments noone can afford.

Affordable housing is key to attract people into denser areas I think. The problem is cities like New York and LA focus mainly on the rich and poor the middle class is left out and they generally flee to suburbs or smaller areas widening the gap between rich and poor in large cities.

I vote cities. As population increases, suburbs become denser, and become incorporated into nearby cities to create megalopoli. We can see this already happening. Look at major cities, they have swollowed up outlying suburbs and towns over time.
