epsom salts as dessicant
    #2087204 - 11/09/03 07:26 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

ok i have epsom salts, and i know that i can bake them in the oven to remove moisture so i can use them as a dessicant, but would it be possible to microwave them to remove the water content? just worried that i would cook them to long and possibly burn them. anyone got any ideas?

Why not just go buy Damp-Rid for like three bucks?

Don't dry them in the oven, heat will kill the psilocybin.

First fan dry your mushrooms for about 24 hours. Then go to a hardware store and get some Damp-Rid, put it in the bottom of a tupperware container, put a screen over that and put your mushrooms on the screen. After a few days they'll be cracker dry.

GOT IT. Thanks

did you even read my post jba6511? i know that i can bake it 40 min at 400, thats not what i asked.  i asked if i could microwave it instead of baking it.  As for damp-rid, i am a lazy mofo, i already have a box of epsom salts here from an old project and i was hopin to use it for something.  mycocat, i dont think you can estimate my intense laziness...its not the $3, its the figuring out where to buy it, and then going to that store, and then walking around for a while to find it in the store, then lifting up the box itself, oh itd be brutal. id much rather reach 1 foot to my right and hit the nuker button. :crazy2:

angry - for future reference (when you run out of Epson salts), Damprid can be found in the paint department at Home Depot, and in the cleaning product areas of Target & Walmart - always in stock. Well, I live in a humid area, so it's sold everywhere here.
I've found I can get a LOT of life out of a box of Damprid (sells for $2.49 to $2.99 here) without any kind of drying out procedure. I have 2 screens in my tupperware container. I lay a paper towel over the lower screen, dump a pile of Damprid on the towel, and then put the 2nd screen over that. Make sure the 2nd screen doesn't lay right on top of the damprid - you don't want any mushies touching your dessicant. Lay fan-dried shroomies on the top screen. The moisture will wick from the Damprid into the paper towels and if you replace the paper whenever it starts to get moist, you can just keep dumping that pile of Damprid onto fresh paper towels. Pick any obvious wet clumps of Damprid out when you change the paper towels. You can dry it out and re-use if you want, but I just toss it - it's a minimal amount as long as I stay on top of paper towel swaps.
Early on I tried baking dessicants and re-using. Just wasn't worth the time, trouble, mess. ymmv
Good luck.

I don't think the microwave would work. The whole point to heating the epson salts is to drive out the moisture, and that moisture would have nowhere to go in the microwave. That's why if you want crunchy pizza crust or toast, you have to put it in some sort of oven. (a toaster is basically the same principal) A microwave will just heat up a piece of bread and all the moisture is still there. You might actually damage the microwave doing this.
