Do both.

What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. i think we'd have enough if they stopped locking people up for drug offenses. but then i also think there should be greater sentences for real crimes than they're currently handing down... so maybe they'd offset eachother, and we would indeed have to build more. i dunno.

If they ended welfare and minimum wage, as many of you conservatives would like, then they would need more space, since many more people would turn to crime to feed their families.

Exactly. Drugs should be legal. As a matter of fact many things should be legal as long as they physically harm no-one else. However, life should mean life and violent crimes should be punished much more severely.

to the extent that that's true, so be it. thieves belong in prison, not in office.

I think that West Virginia has one of the lowest per capita incomes in the U.S., yet it has one of the lowest crime rates as well. I find that to accuse the poor of criminal tendencies merely because they are poor is a rather elitist attitude. Being poor does not equate with dishonesty nor thievery.

I don't think the poor are any more dishonest than anyone else, but I think that given desperate circumstances, any of us would commit theft if it was necessary to our survival.

i agree with silver. its strange though that you would even ask this quesion, not only are you going to get everyone at a drug-affiliated website to say that drugs should be legal, but its also the most obvious answer to the question. i mean what is it, half are in for crimes relating to drugs i believe?

I think it's sick that corporations are profiteering off of prison privatization.
with over 2 million in prison, nearly half non-violent drug offenders, we need to reevaluate the way our legal systems work when corporations are being allowed to cull profits from beings incarcerated under draconian drug laws.

i asumed you would bring up ending drug war. just wanted to start a discussion what are your beliefs on mandatory minimum sentences besides the fact that they are for drugs they are for other crimes. for ex. a 20 yr old male had consenul sex with 2 14yr olds and his mandatory sentence was 52 years for a nonviolent crime is this right. maybe this could take out 50000 or so prisoners if mandatory sentences taken out and the judge or jury and more le way for individual cases

Ending the drug war would work. Fomenting a society where people don't feel the need to be materialistic, thus, they don't steal anything that isn't nailed down. Our values are all screwed up in America, sadly.
