Incubation Help
    #2089858 - 11/10/03 05:46 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I have 12 cakes in incubation right now. I have two plastic containers, one slightly smaller than the other. I am using a water heater to heat the inner chamber. I checked on my cakes today after 5 days of innoculation and it is very humid inside the chamber. I have the smaller container with the cakes inside of it. And the smaller container has a lid on it. That smaler container sits inside of the larger container which is filled slightly with water, and I also have a lid on the big container. I was wondering if that is too humid? The temp inside has maintained a steady 83 degrees, but when I opened it today it was very humid, and I could smell something funny. This is my first grow so I dont know whether or not to expect contams from the smell. I hope not but any help or advice is appreciated.

*bump bump*

I have the same type of setup. Unfortuanlty, when I finally got my incubator setup.. I didnt have time for my "hobby" anymore. Now that I do have time again... the first try since being back into it... it didnt work out (spores too old, i do believe) and this last time... it didnt work out (too much water in recipe?).

Anyways... I am wondering if there should be any certian period after innoculation that you should wait before putting the jars in the incubator? Anyone?

Take two containers, put pump and heater in the first container. Pump is to stir the water so it doesn?t just heat up from the bottom up. Put the jars in the top container and cover.

Now if it?s to humid mold can start to grow in the incubator. Now the good thing is if there is a little humidity in there the jars won?t dry out as fast cause it?s harder to give off water in humid conditons.

Oh yeah, tie the containers together so the top one won?t float.

It does seem to work.

He he.....I?ve done horse and cow with straw before, along with both rye and millit. I have a lot of time on my hands. I?m getting old and don?t need as much so some grain (rye) casings will be fine for me. I?d just do the tek but I gave all my jars to a friend who is doing his first grow so my half pints are gone.

I fully agree that horse and straw are the way to go but a couple of casings will last me a while.

fun time

Hey..i know you were talking about smelling something funny...like a really odd..off kind of smell...this happens when the jars have to much heat on them...it basically cooks your jars....only problem i had with my incubator set up...

I went by the temp on my fish tank heater...which was off majorly,..i ended up cooking my cakes...once you open up the lid,..after they show no growth/ to slow or stopped growth...they wil have that smell inside the jar from being cooked...if one jar looks dry..take it out and open it up...youll have to throw most em away..believe me..i had to toss out 20 jars...and i was pissed

My cousins gynecologist uses Magash's setup with the
pump and 2 18 gal rubbermaids. She also uses a
"ReptiTemp 500r" to control the heater. It has a remote
sensor you snuggle between the jars. Monitor the temp
and adjust the dial on the reptitemp.
