fruit fly oubreak
    #2087623 - 11/09/03 09:31 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

heres some background info:
afoaf has a rubbermaid with horse poo in lasagna pans. they started in pint jars with WBS. the strain is EQ and he's been at it for 3 years about. they pinned nicely and started growing and now:

there seems to be fruit flys (we think fruit flys, there really tiny) coming out left and right. there all over the house and we have no idea what the hell is going on. i probably just killed 50 when i was in the bedroom an hour ago. they just sit on the walls. they arent contaminating the trays at all and the shrooms are growing nicely...but there flying all over. i dont think the rubbermaids are completely air tight and they can escape from it. each day theres probably 30 or so dead on the bottom or the sides (cause of water droplets) of the maid each day and he takes the trays out and rinses them down the drain. this happened once before like 6 months ago but afoaf forgot about some pans with poo, and it eventually got contaminated and flys burst out everywhere.

has anyone else had this problem or heard about it? my guess is that maybe when he pastuerized the horse poo, there was eggs in it and they somehow survived the heat?

Its interesting you would be having fruit fly problems during winter in Canada.

For the house, get some fly spray, and kill them. Use fly paper in your fruiting chamber, and if you want to get more into it, you could soak some cigg tobacco in water and spray that over the casing and on the sides of the fruiting chamber.

I thought nicotine is a fugicide.... it doesn't hurt the mycelium?

I like the vacuum idea <grin>

What you have are fungas gnats.

i hate those guys.

it would be a good idea to seperate the infested cakes/casings from any untouched ones (if there are any left).

whenever i get an infestation, i usually just take everything outside and bury it. i've never had much luck against those little bastartds.

Hmm fruit flies, fungas gnats I would recommend that you add Pyrethrum which is an organic insecticide to your terranium. If you are using perlite I would empty the perlite and add some more but add a small amount of the insecticide to your water. The insecticide will kill the pupae and overtime rid you totally of the menace. BEST OF ALL this insecticide is totally harmless to mammals(meaning you)
