What the hell is Tumblr?

I have this female friend that constantly requests that I make a Tumblr account so I can follow her on there.

So I finally joined last night. I have absolutely no fuckin' idea what I'm doing though.

Any of guys know what the point of it is? I feel like it's just a FB type site but with only pictures. What exactly am I supposed to do on there?

Thanks for any help. I'm beyond confused with this shit.

yah. FB helps me keep in touch with all the people i would otherwise not be able to reach anymore (typically childhood friends)

My analysis after having used all this shit:

Reddit is awesome if you can ignore the neckbeard userbase and some silly subreddits. Instagram is watered down Facebook, except they added image filters. Twitter is news for sheep. Tumblr is a diary for depressed/menstrual/egotistical women around the world. College freshmen use Yik Yak and it can occasionally be useful. Pintrest is a DIY and fashion site, although some of the ideas are really hit and miss in real world execution. Spotify and Pandora are cool, but the latter is less spammy/clunky but less powerful. Tinder, in all it's simplicity, actually works for hookups or dates. MySpace and Google Plus should have died by now. GroupMe is a great app for group messaging and should be used if you have such a need.

Thanks for the advice guys. The girl that kept asking me to join is actually in her mid 30's. At least there's some sexy pictures of her on there. I still don't know what the hell I'm doing on there though lol.

Tumblr is good when you're looking for .gifs or cool pics in general. I can't even imagine why or how someone would use it otherwise.

Never been much a fan of reddit but there's always cool stuff on there if you're willing to look. It's quite the odd mess of personalities.

I use spotify all the time. I'm using it right know actually, on my iPad. I've found a fair amount of good music on there, and lots of my favourites are always around.

Is anyone gonna actually pay for this new youtube music thing they're doing?

I sure as hell won't be as Spotify is synced on my phone and laptop. I can deal with an add every now and again.

I don't plan on using it myself, but the offline play feature does sound appealing. $10 a month is a lot for this. Especially considering Internet usage if you're out and on your phone.

Yea. It indeed does sound pretty interesting for people that have to worry about data usage on their phone.

I'm lucky we have MetroPCS here with unlimited data/minutes/text for 50 bucks a month.

Yea man. When android smartphones first came out I got suckered into a 1 year contract with Verizon.

Ended up paying around $120 a month including taxes. Never again will I sign a contract with one of the major carriers.

To be fair with MetroPCS they offer 500gb a month at 4G. Once you go over that the speed goes down to 3G.

Both pinterest and tumblr are places to show off with other people's creativity for the neurotically attention-craving, either with problematic psychiatric issues that disturb social life (the former) or more benign quirks that tend towards homely activities (the latter).

lol Koraks. Sounds about right. It seems all these new social media platforms that exist now you've managed to perfectly describe.

FB is alright in my book though as I live so far away from my family. It's nice to keep in touch with them for free. The days when I had to call internationally cost me an arm and a leg.

Facebook has its merits, certainly. I haven't found a use for it so I've managed to stay without a profile; I use LinkedIn for professional activities and to keep track of a couple of people from a social perspective. That basically fills the gap that others fill with FB, I think. I kinda like the idea of only having one site to have to keep an eye on from time to time. I'm too scatterbrained as it is :lol:

I like Tumblr. You can find really specific pictures with ease to plaster on forums such as this one. The user base seems to be mostly jail bait though. I wouldn't bother trying to socialize on there :burke:

Btw, Flickr hasn't been mentioned in this thread, but it seems to be in a different league. Many really good photographers on there. Some good discussions too on technique, although they're often not indexed properly by Google or they have changed the URL in the meantime, which can be annoying.

kinda. how many reblogs, followers, comments, etc,

took years but i was kinda addicted. posting og pics, and not shit off the web. idk the first year i had like 12 followers and somehwow got to 12000 or so and once you get a pic to get relogged like 4000 times its like fuck yea lol. tumblr is weird.

i see great blogs get no attention and shit blogs get tons love.

i now deleted my "famous" blog and just post Flickr posts. and follow no one

Mostly younger women/girls like it. I only go on there when I'm stoned looking for cool images and it works for that, but I could care less about the social interaction aspect

I had a tumblr for a while, I mainly followed graphic artists and history/literature/fashion blogs. It's not a bad resource at all, but there is definitely a lot of narcissistic idiots whining about first world problems and the patriarchy on there - but you can find info/material on there just about anything.

The last guy I dated was 25 and had a tumblr that was mainly focused on comic books and his deep seated angst that rivaled that of a 14 year old girl...he was exhausting.
