Korg

M-Audio

Casio

lots of good ones

Crystal, you delving into production and synths now? sweet! i was thinking yesterday... what would a really awesome classical composition sound like (like Symphony of the Universe) with electronic composition and components over it? :awesome: could be pretty cool.

this is cool, too but it's all over the place, G, you might not dig it, but i thought i'd give it a shot. these keys are crazy.

the kaos pad is awesome. i've used one plenty. made this on it. sounds like being tossed around in a washing machine, almost, but it has more of a beat.

oh i need to produce something full fledged, damn it.

The Beastie Boys sampled Rachmaninoff and put stuff over it in that manner you describe.

And by Beastie Boys I probably mean Mixmaster Mike, their DJ.

alot of wicked old school DJs. the DJs made the band sometimes... and in the case of Beastie Boys maybe even.

but, yeah, electronic umm... tone... is still something that can be composed classically... you just don't see it much. and then adding classical composition (serious composition), and electronic music... even rarer.

especially, you know someone writing it all that way from the ground up, no collaboration or sampling or covering, but writing for that purpose of mixing the two styles.

Used korg tritons are good if they have enough memory (be careful with that). Used korg kromes are also good (and they have good amounts of memory). Pretty much anything korg.

Look on stage at any decent act and they will have more Korg and Roland equipment than Casio.  'Nuff said.

CRYSTAL G, nice choice to mess around and create some electronic music. What computer are you using currently? Mac or PC?

Here is some major DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) you can buy to record your music with, and potentially use midi instruments for drum tracks or what ever you want: Pro Tools, Ableton, Cubase, Logic Pro for Apple, Studio One by PreSonus,  Reason by Propellerhead, and Fruity Loops come to mind off the top of my head.

If you're on MAC: Logic Pro or Ableton
If you're on PC : Ableton or what ever else you find most intriguing.

But, to add to the mix, if you're more of a hands on person, or just prefer hardware over software like myself, check out these awesome all-in-one, analog music machines by Elektron.. If you saved a little bit more, got one of these, and then connect a 8 octave midi key board you could do ALOT. You can lay down 6 tracks and make entire songs and then perform with it if you want. The effects and instruments sound really lush and clean.

Elektron Monomachine on left. This is basically the set up I am suggesting. No need for a computer.

A demonstration and performance.

I currently use a Mac although I will probably be getting a PC from my company. Although I do not know whether I will be able to download stuff on it or use programs on it.

Better safe to just say I'll be on a Mac.

Perfect! Definitely consider Apple's Logic Pro X. It's a good price and a hell of a DAW. Great quality, MANY musicians use it.

Logic Pro X is only 200 so you definitely have a few hundred left over for a sweet keyboard that you like. Make sure the keyboard has MIDI if you want to connect it to your computer and control virtual instruments from Logic or which ever DAW you choose. Browse through Musiciansfriend or SweetWater for keyboards, synthesizer and midi keyboards in the search bar. Should come up with some results. Craigslist isn't a bad place too look either.

Apple Logic Pro

I'm assuming if I get a Kaossilator Pro Plus, I won't need to use any computer programs, yes?

If you're only wanting to play your keyboard, and then add some effects to it, and loop a couple parts, then sure no need for a computer. But after a while, that's going to become pretty stale and boring. Are you wanting to write music or just mess around for like 20 minutes and never really do anything productive?

If you're wanting to make complete songs with drum parts, various instruments like bass, percussion, pads, strings, etc.. and all the effects you could want/need, then you'll want to go the computer route and get Logic Pro X with a midi keyboard. Logic Pro X is cheaper than the Kaos Pad, and is waaaaay more capable and you'll be much more productive with it.

If you really like the gimmicks of the kaos pad though, feel free to get it. But, there's only so much you can do with it. I used to think they were cool like 10 years ago, but long ago I also realized the quality of the effects are low, and the long term capabilities are limited. I really can't stand the kaos pad, honestly.

If you go the computer route, you can record ideas, save the idea. Come back later, add to it. Take out parts, move em around, add effects to certain tracks (just drums or just keys), instead of adding effects to EVERYTHING at once, like the Kaospad. You can have many tracks saved, and jump around tracks, depending which one you want to work on.

In the long run, you'd be happier with Logic Pro X and a midi keyboard. Logic Pro will do all the gimmicky Koas Pad stuff and much more, for CHEAPER. The kaos pad looks cooler than it really is.

So here is the basic set up....

Your Mac w/ Apple's Logic Pro X - $200.00

<---- connected by USB Midi to --->

M-Audio Oxygen 61 USB Midi Keyboard - $220.00
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/keyboards-midi/m-audio-oxygen-61-mkiv

You can utilize those pads and knobs on the keyboard to sync to Logic Pro, and lets say after you record a track, you can adjust effecets or volume or whatever you want, in real time, through the knobs rather then through the computer. Very convenient.

Total of $420.00 for the basic set up.

One last recommendation might be some decent studio monitor headphones, to get accurate depictions of your mix. Here's some great sony headphones for $100.00..
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/sony-mdr-7506-headphones?pfm=sp

OR, for a little bit more, Aphex Twin recently desribed these headphones as his favorite headphones for the studio, and some of the best he has ever used/heard.
