Calcium/Magnesium vitamin tablets.
    #20869757 - 11/21/14 10:42 AM (9 years, 4 months ago)

Hi, will these Calcium/Magnesium tablets (powdered) make a good substitute for Gypsum?.
3 tablets have:
              Calcium (carbonated, gluconate, citrate)  1000mg
              Magnesium (oxide, gluconate, citrate)      400mg

It's for using in the substrate using PF-Tek.

Cheers :sun:

PF Tek with BRF?

You don't need any gypsum for that.

Yep BRF. I thought I'd read that gypsum helps with production with BRF.  If I can do without it, it would make it much easier as I can't find it here. No other food than BRF and Verm then.
Cheers :pipesmoke:

Gypsum seems to be used when you are working with grains, not BRF cakes

I certainly did not use any gypsum in my cakes and all is going well so far.
If you ever do decide to try out grains and need the gypsum, I am sure you could get some online or from a nursery?

I think scrapings from plaster board is gypsum, but I've only seen it sold in massive pieces. On-line maybe the answer

As there is no calcium in vermiculite or brf. I imagine a high in calcium mineral water might be best to mix the substrate. I was planning on distilled.

Gypsum us beneficial in any grow. For BRF cakes Ill add Gypsum at about %5.

I would not use those tablets. Just go to the garden supply store and pick up a small bag for a few bucks. The stuff is inexpensive, and doesn't go bad. If you stick with the hobby it will pay for itself in short order.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'd love to grab a big bag of it. Unfortunately, here is is quite hard to get hold of here. I've tried Garden Centrers with a list of names for Gypsum and Calcium Sulphate in Spanish. In the end Yeso Natural and Guiz where the correct words, but still the garden centres didn't stock it :/ They did have some calcium liquid for plants

The chemist didn't have Calcium Sulphate, and sold me the tablets, lol :crazy2:

My last option is a builders yard. The thing is that plaster is also called yeso, and I am unsure if this will be any good, as it goes hard when you wet and dry a bit.

      Or

Maybe I can get a piece of plasterboard for scrapings, the make of plasterboard is Pladur, and is a grey dry cement inside.

Any idea if any of this will do?

Thanks lots guys :sun:

Just read this post from 2008: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9043844

Musher_420 says: "The important thing is to be sure your gypsum source doesn't contain magnesium.  Some items are labeled as gypsum but are not just calcium sulfate (the gypsum we want) they may contain dolomite (calcium magnesiumsulfate).  I bought such a bag from a garden center being told it was gypsum.  Magnesium is toxic to fungi so it's useless to us.
If someone here knows hot to tell if magnesium is present in the gypsum that would be helpful to determining what can and can't be used".

I don't think they put much on the bags, but I will still have a look. Maybe there is a difference between the grey and white plaster board.

If no luck, I think it will have to be a chemistry shop on-line.

i think i recall reading somewhere that one could use "plaster of paris"...prepare it as instructed...allow to cure/dry...and then pulverize it to a powder.

Well my bad then, I do not recall seeing anything about Gypsum in the PF Tek.

I am also struggling to find Gypsum, most nursery / gardening places look at me as if I am daft when I ask for Gypsum.

What exactly does the Gypsum do for the BRF cakes? I read that it helps prevent grains from "popping" and clumping together - although for PF Tek with BRF cakes you do not really have to worry about either of those things.

adds calcium and sulfur (nutrients) BRF is plenty nutritious so it's not needed in cakes.

gypsum is a nutrient to the fungi. they will break down calcium sulphate and use it.

You will notice a definite difference with Gyp if you can get it. If not though, don't worry about it. As stated above BRF is already pretty damn nutritious. Its easy to get caught up in the little things. The original PF Tek does not call for gyp, its just a nice thing to add if you have it available.
