Should I quit skating?
    #20873200 - 11/22/14 12:33 AM (9 years, 2 months ago)

So skateboarding has been for the most part my life outside of work/school for the past 2 or 3 years. I have been loving it for a long time. But the past 5 or 6 months I have been hating it. I feel like I have been getting worse, less consistent, and more scared to try things every time I skate. It literally puts me in the worst, most bummed out mood ever like 50% of the time I go out skating with my friends. But its like, allll of my friends and activities are based around skating.. I dont know what I would do if I just stopped doing it but at the same time, it only brings me enjoyment like 25% of the time i do it...

Im almost 21 and feel like maybe ive outgrown it or something but idk... All my friends are around my age or older and keep getting better and having fun while im stuck trying my hardest to have fun and pretending like im enjoying it when most of the time im not..

The friends I have thru skateboarding have been my friends forever now and I dont really know where or how to make new friends and I enjoy hanging out with them but I just dont get skateboarding anymore.. Like im really good at it but just not feeling it anymore.. Idk how else to explain.... The only time I seem to do ALRIGHT at skateboarding is when im drinking, or if im on adderall ill fucking kill it

Hell No. Well that'd be my answer. I've been through the same phase before and loving something soo much is hard to quit. Personally, what helped my a great bit was instead of learning new tricks or just repeating the old one; I just started cruising. Around the city, sight seeing, looking for new spots, and just flowing on Mother Earth brought a whole new perspective to my skating. Then whenever I do skate with friends working on my tricks and etc. started being a whole lot more better.

Well, i could never fully quit skateboarding.. Its someting thats been with me nearly my whole life and I still get a good feeling just thinking about it. But i think mabey its time to either take a brake or put my focus/free time into something else for awhile? Idk honestly i hate thinking that im starting to dislike my only hobby/sport haha.

I feel you bro, brakes are necessary sometimes. When you take something seriously it feels like a chore to do it. So if you take a lil brake you'll most likely find the fun in it again sooner than you expect.

As someone who skates on occasion myself and has been since Middle School, take a break.

Ya I wish I could just take a brake for a while but I really dont know what the fuck I would do for that time. The only thing I ever do other than working and school is skate, film skateboarding, and party/drugs so if I coudnt do that I would go crazy.

I used to skate a lot when I was younger. I don't do it that much these days. I feel like I can't afford to get hurt skating, plus I never got very good at it. I do still skate though, its just not as important to me as it once was.

I ended up with a long board and I like it. I can just ride, and not feel like I need to try to grind on things, or try flip tricks. Just ride. I still love the feeling of skating.

If you aren't really having fun skating, don't pretend to. Find some other hobbies to fill your 75% not enjoying skateboarding time with. Get a musical instrument, start drawing or painting, grow some mushrooms. Something like that, I'm sure you have other interests besides skateboarding, start exploring those things more.

I agree with the suggestions of finding other hobbies, but I would be cautious of allowing yourself to use these new hobbies as excuses to not go skate.

I've been skateboarding since I was 4 years old. For the next 13 years, it was all I ever wanted to do. I took advantage of every single chance I had to sesh a new park, go spot-hunting, or even just pump around in a bowl for 1 minutes

I was 17 when drugs started to become more of a lifestyle than an experiment/hobby, and I began skating less and less over the next several years. There were a few years in which I only went skating maybe 5-6 times total, whereas 15-year-old me would have been spending every single second of free time at the park.

Even when I got off heroin and started living the sober life for a while, I still didn't feel very motivated to go skate. Once I get out there and I'm in the middle of a solid sesh with all the homies, I couldn't be happier. But I find it harder to get out there and get to it. I still skate, but not nearly as much as I used to/would like to.... Some people just grow out of it I guess, and I suppose that could be one factor for me. Another part of it is the fact that I just simply can't handle the slams these days the way I could when I was a kid/teenager. For some reason it just doesn't hurt as much when you're a youngin'...
:feelsbadman:

I'll probably keep skating for as long as I am physically capable, but I'm not sure I'll ever recover the frequency or the degree of tenacity that I used to have in regards to skating. I've made peace with it for the most part. I still like picturing myself as someday being one of those old dudes who shows up at the skatepark and just tears up the bowl. When I get a group text about hitting the skatepark or one of the indoor ramps in town, I often come up with some excuse for why I can't join. But now when I get those texts, I remind myself of that mental image of someday being one of the OG old dudes that the teenage parkrats look up to, and it definitely helps to motivate me a little bit to get out there and get after it.

Skateboarding will always be a love of mine, but I just don't think it is likely that my path will revert back to a lifestyle which completely and utterly revolves around skateboarding.

TL;DR: Keep skating if that's what you want to do, but don't feel like you are obligated to simply because you've been doing it for so long.

:peace: , & :mushroom:

Take a short break, even just a few days off. It's amazing what it will do to re-energize you when you get back out there. Creativity, energy, and your love of the hobby will snap right back into focus. It happens to everyone at some point or another, no matter what hobby they may be into.

If someone's not paying you to do it, you should enjoy every second of what you're doing for fun, all the time. If you aren't, than what's the point?
