Well all phones can be traced.......but having a prepaid is anonymous at least......kind of pricey for minutes though
They are easy to set up...... you buy the phone.....buy the little card for the minutes.....then call and enter the number on the card...about as anonymous as you can get

There are also so-called disposable cell phones that you can apparently purchase at gas stations, conveniance stores, and, according to a friend of mine, even Wal-Mart.

They can triangulate the signal received by booster towers from your mobile, i think this is only accurate to about 3KM so they dont know exactly where you are.

Why go through all that when any phone made post 9/11 has a built in GPS that sends its location back when asked?

Really? Are you sure you dont have to give them your personal info(like address and name and home phone) to set-up the phone?
They don't require them to buy. When you refill the phone, you can use cash as well.

Is this in standard practice? Say for instance, if someone called 911 from a cell phone. Do the police have/use the technology to pinpoint the call from the cell phone?

Do the police have/use the technology to pinpoint the call from the cell phone? by 2005 all ohines have to have a gps tracking chip in them, mine does, allthough i have the option to set it to 911 only, but who knows is that is the case, there is also a thread about this in the S&S forum

Yes, after 9/11 something like 95% of all cell phones manufactured have a GPS chip in them. Read here ....
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/scitech/FutureTech/e911cell030304.html - "A cell-phone call can be tracked by one of several different means.
One relatively easy method would require a simple modification to existing software and hardware used to handle and route calls within a cellular phone service's network. Since each cell phone is basically a radio transmitter that broadcasts (and receives) signals from a system of local cell-phone antenna towers, a wireless network always "knows" where a particular phone is generally located within an area."
http://www.matr.net/article-7665.html - "The mapAmobile service, launched last month across Britain, charges 30 pounds ($48) a year and 30 pence (48 cents) per request. It claims accuracy to within 50 yards.
Even more precise services are likely in the United States within the next year as more phone models come with global positioning system (GPS) chips already installed."
I doubt that your run of the mill police station has the ability to track all cell phone calls, but give them 2 years

I seriously doubt turning the GPS feature off will do any good. If the government wants that feature to work, it will work.
