No one has nice furniture anymore and it makes me sad :/
    #20863651 - 11/20/14 02:19 AM (9 years, 2 months ago)

Everyone would rather buy boxed furniture from IKEA or Walmart that is made of particle board and breaks down after a few years than get something that is handmade, made of naturally beautiful wood, and lasts forever with some care.

And no one uses coasters anymore either because they don't have nice furniture. I constantly have to put coasters under my house guests' drinks because they are used to their faux-wood..

We have a couch that's in pretty bad shape, and the chair in the middle of the room was handed down to my mom from my great-grandparents. It's old but still works well.

I try to avoid putting drinks on people coffee tables or anything like that before asking them or copying what they do. Most of my friends (19-25) either have old shitty furniture from home or old shitty furniture they picked up from good will...neither of which the vast majority of them give a damn about. I myself am pretty picky about my furniture. I'm of the mind that I'd rather shell out a lump sum one time than pay 1/3 of it every year because I bought cheap, flimsy garbage. I really only care about the things I actually use regularly though...so I'd be willing to skimp on things like coffee tables or night stands in favor of a nicer couch or desk chair or speakers or something. That being said though, cheap boxed furniture from IKEA or Walmart isn't always trash. I'm pretty damn pleased with the IKEA Galant desk I have for the price I got it for, and my last few desk chairs have been from good will while I wait for a solid deal on a steelcase or a hermann miller.

Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."

That's cause our economy is fucked and the people selling the handmade shit are only selling a fraction of what they used to, so have to charge astronomically more for it.

At my stage in life, Ikea shit works fine, and you save money by not really having to transport it if you dont want to, you're OK with leaving a coffee table behind, cause you can get a new one for like 129$

Or just hang about your local college dorms around the time everyone goes home/graduates or hit up a good will and get a good/ reasonably shitty one for little to no cost because they all think exactly the same way you do.

i agree with the OP but honestly i never spent any money on furniture! i would love to but i can´t afford it and on the other hand i got ALL i needed from the street!
depending where you live and your willingness to make due with what you have for a while you could find all you need on the street, stuff that people leave to get new better stuff...
it also makes it interesting for a period, your home keeps adapting and changing as you upgrade the things you get...

well that and stuff that friends give you when they move or change...

and cloths too for that matter... from time to time a specific thing is necessary to buy but the amount of just normal stuff you can find and looks great and fits is sometimes overwhelming! we usually throw out a whole bag of cloths each year and exchange for better stuff with the occasional find!

but then again... i guess it depends where you live, it´s easy in a big city... not so much in suburbia or the country...
