look for:

5-7 ribbs [rarely 4 or 8]

aereolae spaced about an inch to an inch and a half
apart, noched inward at the top, pionting slightly upward

spines blonde, becomming darker at the tips, spines verry short [in the 1-3mm range].

i'm having trouble describing the features of the growth-cap.

i'll try to get pics to illustrate each feature i've mentioned in a few min.

here are some pictures:

growth cap:

a cross section to give you an idea of rib shape/structure:

a picture of the aereolae and spines demonstrating size, spacing, orientation and structure [the pencile is there for scale]:

another picture of the spines against a white back-ground to give a better idea of color:

hope this helps .

Since I have no idea of how to start my own topic, I'm gonna ask my question here. Now this may sound stupid, but while talking to a friend yesterday, we got on the discussion of mushrooms growing naturally out of cow dropings and the thought occured to me, after I eat a dose of mushrooms, why don't I take a dump in my specially prepared garden bed. The spores should be there and get activated the same way it does on cow dung. Yeah, I know the smell could offend some of my neighbors, but I feel that that is a small price to pay for all the benefits that will come from it. Am I nuts?

to start: this is not the correct forum for this question.

for reference; the "post" button is located near the top of each forum just above the list of threads.

in answer to your question, psilocybian mushrooms do not grow in human feces, or that of any carnivore. the the copriphilous species grow [prediminantly] on the dung of large grazing mammals due to thses animals' poor digestion, and the fact that the diets of said animals are grasses, grains and other substrates supportive of the growth of the mushrooms in the first place.

if you will take the time to read the mushroom hunting FAQ [a link to wich is located at the top navigation bar] many of your questions will be answered. these are verry commonly asked questions wich is why they are covered in the FAQ.

I found a few small pedros which I bought for about 2 bucks each. All Depots cacti come from Kactus Kountry in huge flats of assortments. No telling what they will send. However, if you want a good large pedro there's a good website selling like three feet high ones for $25. texun or az or something like that. Do a Google since we aren't supposed to provide links. I guess.

A lot of stopres refer to Cereus which is a genus of cactus also use in grafting, but I saw many at a Walmart once years ago. Some stores carry them as decorative cactus' used for grafting.

Not all stores carry them. It is the suppliers who send them. The stores really do not peosonally order certain cactus for customers. Other plant and actus stores have them. you need to look around. Some sell them adn some do not. the usuall original orders formthose in SA who shiop themt ot he USA have to have an order of 100 pounds of regular catus to an equal order of The san pedros before they are allow ed to shoip them out.

In 1976 I was paying a distribuitor $3.00 a cactus for San Pedro. Now they ru n about 15 to 15 each for a good 1-2 poiund one foot long X 4 inches thick.

Those pictures concretefeet provided are an EXCELLENT referance for ID'ing your first Trichocereus Pachanoi. Once you've seen a couple you won't mistake anything else to be them. All my San Pedro have come from nurseries, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc. so yes they are out there, but not all parts of the country will stock them.
