2D RPGs for the SNES, anyone?
    #20853047 - 11/17/14 09:04 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

Ideally talking for the SNES and NES but I'm not entirely fixated on that.

Talking games sort of like Zelda 2, Dragonview, YS 3, Wizards and Warriors and the like, I know they're not strictly RPGs, but you know what I mean. Side scrollers with shops, experience points, people to talk to and that type of shit.

Dragonview and YS 3 are the only ones I can think of off hand for the SNES but there's something really fun about this type of game for me and searching on google hasn't really turned up anything because they can be categorised so many different ways.

So, anybody know any good ones?

I don't know much about NES games since I was born after its time, I know SNES games a lot more, especially RPGs. Here are my favorite ones:

- Illusion of Gaia
- Demon's Crest
- Terranigma
- Secret of Mana
- ActRaiser
- Soulblazer

Pretty much any SNES game before the Square and Enix merge are masterpieces.

Earthbound is a pretty sweet RPG for SNES. Kind of a cult classic, too.

I've played earthbound and chrono trigger multiple times
I think that FF2 USA is great compared to the harder more "complicated" japanese one
secret of mana is fun, would binge play that in a couple days
Illusion of Gaia seconded

the first act raiser is cool it goes from 2d side scroller segments to a kind of civiliation game

Completely agreed, but none of those are side scrolling. Kactus smashed it, though. I guess there might just not be too many for the SNES at all cause it was a dying genre by then.

Unfortunately the SNES YS 3 is kind of shittier looking than the NES one despite being supposedly updated, and it has a cut off screen. Dragonview is solid but you can tell they rushed the hell out of the graphics.

Actraiser 1 is cool, but I'd see that as basically a civilisation style thing blended with side scrolling rather than a 2D RPG type thing.

I'm sure there's a couple more around for the SNES and hopefully they're obscure and piss cheap, but that could be wishful thinking. Bet you there's billions that were Japan only.

Maybe it was so done to death on the NES they just dropped it in the SNES days, but there's something really addictive about those 2D games with houses and shops and characters and what not. Demon's Crest is a really good SNES one I forgot about, but unfortunately it costs $200 or something obscene an emulation just doesn't quite have the same charm.

It barely effects the gameplay, I know, but somehow just the tiny added element of quests, shops and talking NPCs has its own charm.

I was convinced Castlevania 4 had some of those elements but I actually don't think it does.

While we're on the top view ones, though, Alcahest is pretty good for anyone who likes that sort of thing. Basically just a massively simplified secret of mana  and weirdly the experience points just give you extra continues but it looks and plays nicely
