First Casing Ever: Questions

A foaf did his first two casings ever last night. He used three cakes per container and used a 60/40 coco/verm mix. Its been about 24 hours now and there's a fair amount of water droplets collecting on the saran wrap cover the containers. Does this mean there is too much humidity in the container? He read all the FAQs and made sure that there was just the right amount of water added to the casing mix. Also, he's got the casings sitting on a heating pad where they are at a relative temp of 80-83 degrees. Should he be fanning the casings like you would with a cake? The docs he read said nothing about doing that.
Thanks!

When you case, most of the time you want to incubate the casing for around 3 days so the myc could heal and colonize the casing layer. water droplets on the saran wrap are frequent and i don't really care about em.
when it's time to initiate the light cycle, remove the saran wrap and put the pan in your terrarium with 90%-100% humidity.
at least, that's how it works for my friend.

So, should he put them in an incubator for three days or is leaving the containers on top of the heating pad good enough?

Are they in a dark place? You don't want to introduce light to them until the mycelium has had a chance recover and colonize the casing layer.

They are the throw-away aluminum baking pans. He's got them sealed with saran wrap, and on top of the he's placed a layer of foil to keep the light out. He's done it like this because he's also got a PMT on top of the heating pad, which needs occasional light. This method will work just fine, right? Also, how long does it usually take before seeing the mycelium start to poke out?

Funnily enough I'm at the exact same point as you.
I've got three one-pint cakes in two casings, each inside of aluminum baking pans with plastic wrap on top. I did two of them yesterday. I'm still waiting on mycelium myself. I'm hoping to see some within three days.

NO LIGHT for the first days! you're only looking for an extra 3 days of colonization so the mycellium could recover.
the incubator is not really necessary as long as the casing is put in the dark. if you don't incubate at 86F, expect a slower recover and aim for 5 days at room temp.
as far as I understand it, the whole incubation period before birthing is to higher the chances of an even pinset (gives you the chance to patch case the first signs of mycellium)
casing some cakes and putting em right away in the terrarium with light is known to work (with most of the time an uneven pinset). you'll still have something to harvest)

By the way, I meant I've got three one-pint cakes in each of the casings. Not that it really matters but I just thought I'd clear it up.

Ok, its been 48 hours and in one of the pans my foaf's noticed some tiny white fuzzy mycelium poking thru in a spot. When it comes time to path, can he just use straight sterilized verm even though his top layer consists of a 60/40 coco/verm mix?

I was just going to ask when exactly I should patch.
Should I wait until the mycelium is poking through in several spots?

chigazer, you should patch with the same material used as the casing layer. This will help keep everything even, if you cant for some reason use the same material then you can use sterilized verm.
MycoCat, yeah, you should patch when some of the mycelium is showing up on the top layer. I usally put it into my fruiting chamber after I patch it but some people wait longer...

wait until you see most of the casing has some mycelium showing in the low spots . you should only patch where mycelium looks glossy or glazed . nice fluffy white stuff with hypel knots is ok . leave it .
