No such thing as "mutant" shrooms.
    #2084339 - 11/08/03 05:00 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

It's been a habit for some time around here to call all deformed mushrooms "mutants". Just from what I know about genetics, most if not all of these are not caused by genetic mutation. It may be caused by genetics, but that's not the same thing as mutation.

when I think of the word 'mutant' I think of something misshapen or distorted in form-altered from nature-and not necessarily something relating to the change in genetic DNA sequence in a gene.

Actually B_H, you're wrong. Certain chemicals and the such contain mutagens. Mutagens clog the DNA replicating enzymes and this causes mutations in the mushrooms genetic structure. Caffeine is probably by far the most potent shroom mutagen. If you apply enough caffeine to kill about 90% of the mycelium, some of the surviving strands will be severely mutated.

so are you saying that if i add some caffiene to my cakes and the start to pin and grow they will be more potent because of the mutation?

It seems like a semantic situation, and depends on the contextual meaning of "mutant." It would seem to me that there are both genetic mutations, that can be passed on generationally, as well as organism mutations, which are simply a product of environment on enzymatic function, which may affect morphology and function, but would not be passed on genetically...

I think you may be correct, in that, many of the things people have been calling "mutants," because of their bizarre appearance, are not genetically based mutations. However, despite the fact that Merriam Webster seems to agree with you, I am still not so sure that the term can't be loosely applied in a purely morphological, or aesthetic, context. Dictionaries are useful tools for defining linguistic convention, but they should never be taken too seriously -- it is, after all, they very plasticity of a language, which gives it it's strength and vitality!

is this maybe a way to check if it is truly a "mutation"?

if a mycelium colony is affected by lets says caffeine, then the mushrooms look deformed.
well collect the spores from said mushroom(s).
grow these mushrooms.
and see if it grows deformed too.

as stated in the above post by Papaver

Mutation:
3 a : a relatively permanent change in hereditary material involving either a physical change in chromosome relations or a biochemical change in the codons that make up genes; also : the process of producing a mutation b : an individual strain or trait resulting from mutation.

well if its a permanent change it will caryy on thru its spores.
if the next gen mushrooms are "normal" then it wasnt a true mutant but deformation because of bad environment(chemicals, contams etc)
just an idea.

Der, they are cool looking mutants and if you keep growing them they will become more and more mutated. they are still potent as hell
